While the city was carried away in Divali festivities, it was another hectic day for doctors and staff at the casualties with people pouring with burns injuries even today.

A 14-year-old boy in Nand Nagri, who was rushed to Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital last night with more than 80 per cent burns, succumbed to his injuries.

“He was most critical among all our 90-odd patients who reported to us during the Divali night and all of them were given adequate treatment and discharged,” said Dr Rajpal, the medical superintendent of GTB Hospital.

Though most of the patients who reported to the casualties last night were having minor to moderate burns, there was no respite for the doctors and staff at the emergency.

At Safdarjung Hospital, a total of 200 patients walked into the hospital until today, with three-fourths of them reporting yesterday.

Dr Karoon Agrawal, the head of the plastics and burns department at Safdarjung Hospital, said, “All were OPD patients with burns of hands and face, usually resulting from “anar” and spiral-shaped crackers. Ten patients came on the previous day of Divali, 150 yesterday and 40 today. Twelve patients came with swellings on face and suspected eye injuries. The patients kept coming till early morning.”

As many as 68 people reported to the eye casualty of the Rajendra Prasad Ophthalmic Sciences Centre of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences where nine patients are still admitted with eye globe ruptures.

“We had 40 patients yesterday who came to us with cracker injuries and 28 more came today. They had injuries from mild abrasion in the cornea to globe perforation,” said a doctor-on-duty at the AIIMS’ eye casualty.

Similar was the scenario at most of the other hospitals. Forty-one patients reported to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. About 25 patients were seen at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital’s casualty.
