New Delhi, November 9 “It is a clear case of dowry death as they had been harassing her for dowry, but the police is trying to show it as a suicide. The police has not recovered any suicide note from the spot,” said Prashant Yadav, brother of Satyam Yadav. Though Delhi police officials today said that they have arrested Pawan Yadav, husband of Satyam, in connection with the case, no action has been taken against the father mother, and two sisters-in-law of the victim even as their names appear in the FIR. Pawan Yadav (28), an MCD schoolteacher, was arrested under section 304b (causing dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code. However, the police officials said that the investigation is on and nothing can be said till they get the postmortem report. |
UNESCO Chair at TERI to boost research
New Delhi, November 9 The chair has been established with a view to promoting dissemination of knowledge, development of technology and sharing of information on climate science. The UNESCO Chair was officially launched by the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova at a function in the Capital today. Also present on the occasion were V. Ramanathan, Director, Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, Scripps Institute of Oceanography and Dr Shailesh Nayak, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences. Bokova stated that UNESCO and TERI have been closely associated on many projects, including the Green Olympiad, and that the UNESCO Chair is another step forward in this regard. Leena Srivastava, university Vice-Chancellor, said, “The university seeks to strengthen the design and delivery of its new programme in climate science and policy and also boost research, through this chair. We will also strive to facilitate collaboration between internationally recognised researchers and teaching staff of the university and other institutions in India as well as Asia, Europe and North America.” TERI University has already tied up with various global universities for being partners in the UNESCO Chair. |
DUSU briefs VC on ‘special chance’
New Delhi, November 9 After a protest march supported by the affected students on north campus today, the DUSU panel met with the Vice-Chancellor. The panel has decided to wait for the administration to respond before launching a full-fledged agitation. “We submitted a memorandum and spoke about our problems and the number of students affected by the scrapping up of the ‘special chance’. We will wait for a few days as the Vice-Chancellor has assured us to look into the matter,” said Arun Huda, DUSU president. |
395 excise cases filed for serving liquor sans licence
New Delhi, November 9 An official of the Excise department said that this year, as many as 395 cases were registered in this connection from January 1 to November 6; 434 persons were arrested and 233 vehicles seized. The Excise Intelligence Bureau (EIB) conducted raids on eating joints, wedding functions, etc. where liquor was being served without procuring the valid permit from the Excise department. |

New Delhi, November 9 A senior police official said that they have lodged an FIR in this respect following the complaint made by the victim. He said that the victim, Pawan Kumar Gupta, lives in Faridabad, Haryana and runs a jewellery shop in the Badarpur area. “We have examined the CCTV footage of the shop, in which the police got to know that two women made off with the jewellery box,” said the police official. |
Factory worker burnt to death
New Delhi, November 9 Delhi Fire Services (DFS) personnel found a man’s charred body. The police later identified him as Arjun, who was a worker at the factory. The six people who were injured were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. According to the DFS, the fire started at the three-storey building at 2.30 pm today and it took them an hour to extinguish it. The police claims that it broke out on the ground floor where the clothes are stitched. “It then reached the second floor through a shaft. The first floor remained unaffected,” said a police officer. The police suspects that the fire started due to shortcircuit in the electrical system on the ground floor. |
