Power tariff: Kejriwal makes RTI plea to DERC
New Delhi, October 30 The order was approved by the then chairperson Berjinder Singh. The order that came to light drawing attention from all the quarters had been a cause of dispute with people here expressing resentment over the steep jump in power charges in the past couple of months. Arvind Kejriwal also wants to inspect all the files related to this subject and the files related to correspondence between the Delhi government and the DERC from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011. He takes a dig at the current DERC chairperson PD Sudhakar, asking him whether he or any of his family members has any relation with the Tatas or any Reliance company. If yes, please specify?, his application reads. Questioning DERC's intentions, he took on the regulatory body and said, "The DERC has mastered the art of dodging RTI applications by asking people to specify file nos or order nos. How does the DERC expect ordinary people to know specific file nos?" The Delhi government had gone with an unexpected hike of 26 per cent in a year for which it had been facing the ire of people backed by IAC's protest and non-cooperation campaign--"Bijli-paani satygraha". It was following the campaign led by the activist-turned-politician that the DERC reduced the tariff recently for both the 0-200 units and 201-400 units slab. |
Cabinet discusses steps to check breeding of mosquitoes
New Delhi, October 30 The number of dengue cases is being reported from various parts of the city. It was also felt that the corporations have failed in their primary responsibilities of cleanliness and sanitation as the city is infested by the mosquitoes. If the civic bodies continue to neglect their functions, the situation may become horrible, the cabinet discussed. Taking serious note of the dengue cases, state Health Minister A.K. Walia today held a review meeting and directed the officials to work out short as well as long term "legislative", enforcement and administrative strategies to effectively prevent and control the disease. During the review, it emerged that the primary sources of growing incidence of dengue in Delhi are the overhead water tanks and construction activities. The minister directed the officials to prepare legislative measures focusing on these areas. The suitable amendments may be made in the Unified Building Bylaws, 1984, for the purpose, he said. He also directed the health officials of the Delhi government to work with local bodies and ensure that manufacturers of overhead tanks are suitably advised and deterrent action be taken against those who don't fall in the line of the government instructions. However, as an immediate measure, executive orders be issued, he directed the officials to ensure wire mesh around the lid openings and overflow pipes so that mosquitoes don't enter and breed in overhead water tanks. He said that Rs 500 will be fined if anyone found guilty of creating mosquitogenic conditions at construction sites. Walia directed municipal health officials to double the number of fogging machines from two per municipal ward to four. The present number of machines available with municipal bodies should be increased from 700 to 1,400, he said. Meanwhile, intensive fogging was carried out at construction sites and in unauthorised colonies and JJ clusters where mosquitogenic conditions prevailed. He also asked the officials to make use of loudspeaker-mounted three-wheelers to communicate the message on checking dengue. |
