JNU council meeting today; strike continues
New Delhi, October 29 There has been no dialogue with the administration yet. JNUSU is demanding that some of their demands should be discussed at the academic council meeting to be held tomorrow. The union is also pushing for increasing the amount of merit-cum-means scholarship meant for the students of economically weaker sections, assigning grace marks to the minority students and changing the 2011 decision of holding separate entrance exams for the integrated courses in the School of Languages. The union has been receiving widespread support from the students who also held a procession last night to gather support. "There has been no dialogue with the administration yet. We are waiting till tomorrow to see if our demands are taken up. Till then, we will continue our hunger strike," said a student participating in the strike. "There are instances where the student is not good at spoken English, but in viva voce, the student is marked less despite having adequate knowledge of the subject," said one of the JNUSU members on strike. "We even approached the Vice-Chancellor, but he did not take any stand. He said the decision would be taken by the council during the meeting only," said Sarfaraz Ahmed, JNUSU member. |
The charred memories of 28 years
New Delhi, October 29 Anchored by senior advocate HS Phoolka, the exhibition as a part of a justice campaign-"Forgotten Citizens 1984" had photos on display, captured by photo journalists that depicted the charred memories of 28 years ago, starting from the worst affected area of Trilokpuri with burning bodies and dogs eating corpses, Connaught Place where shops and properties were set ablaze to the posh area at Prithiviraj Road. Many students today at Delhi University's Arts Faculty where these glimpses were made available to them seemed to be ignorant about the entire episode. Phoolka attributed this to the youth being hitched to the social networking sites. "The youth has been more active on social media and the matter has not been talked about that much on such platforms. There is a need to make them aware about the gruesome episode and the government's indifference thereafter," he remarked. While elaborating on the justice campaign that will culminate on November 3 with a protest at Jantar Mantar, he said the government has forgotten and even the Delhi police has not been fair in the matter. "Only 500 cases have been registered, but a majority of those were closed by the police itself and those that were tried, the witnesses weren't produced. What's more, in many cases, the accused were acquitted on account of faulty investigation conducted by the police, he said. |
