New Delhi, October 19
A delegation of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) led by Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, in charge of the Delhi affairs, today met the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Tejendra Khanna, informing him that the proposed amendment to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara (Amendment) Bill 2012 was a conspiracy to interfere in the religious affairs of the Sikhs for political gains.

According to Ramoowalia, the proposed amendment gives a new lease of life to the present management and makes the Sikhs confront the Congress.

This will also ignore the Supreme Court order which says that the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) elections should be held before December 31.

The delegation comprising Avtar Singh Hit, Onkar Singh Thapar, Kuldip Singh Bhogal and Manjinder Singh Sirsa urged the Lieutenant Governor to conduct the DSGMC elections before that date as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

The Delhi cabinet approved “the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara (Amendment) Bill, 2012 on October 8 regarding the election of the president of the DSGMC”, Ramoowalia said.

He said even the Prime Minister of the country and the chief ministers of the states are elected by the House members. The President too is elected by the elected members of Parliament as well as the assembly.

However, the government of Delhi wants that the president of the gurdwara committee should be elected directly by the people, the leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) said.

This move of the Delhi government is being opposed by all the Sikh bodies – Patna Sahib, Talwandi Sahib, Anandpur Sahib, Singh Sabha gurdwaras, etc, Ramoowalia said.

The UPA government at the Centre and the Congress government in Delhi are repeating the same mistakes as were committed by the late Indira Gandhi in 1982, 83 and 84, he said. The proposed amendment is a direct interference in the Sikh religion that will not be tolerated, he added.

Arrested for killing wife
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 19
The Central district police has arrested one person in connection with the murder of his wife in a hotel at Paharganj, said a senior police official today. He allegedly killed his wife suspecting her of carrying illicit relations with other men, said the police.

The accused Mohd Rashid (30) is a permanent resident of Rampur, UP, said the police. His wife Shazia (22) was found murdered on October 2 in the hotel room. The police registered a case of murder at Paharganj police station.

The accused allegedly disclosed that he along with his wife, Shazia, was residing at Chauhan Banger, Delhi.

“He suspected that she had developed illicit relations with other persons. They often quarrelled over this matter,” said the Central district police.

Two months ago, Shazia left home and went to her parental house. An angry Rashid then hatched a plan to kill her. He called Shazia on October 1 on the pretext of discussing their relationship and took her to a hotel in Paharganj, said the police.

They booked a room in the Hotel Karan Palace. At about 8:00 pm, while discussing the issue, they started quarrelling and the accused then strangulated her with the help of a pillow and thereafter fled from the spot, said the police.
