Rape bid rocks JNU campus
New Delhi, October 9 An FIR has already been registered at the Vasant Kunj police station. According to a senior police official, the incident took place on the night of October 4 when the girl accompanied the accused to JNU. The boy had allegedly intoxicated the girl by adding sedatives in her drink. According to sources on the campus, several student groups had tried to bury the issue initially by asking the girl not to approach the police. However, the girl finally went ahead and lodged a complaint a couple of days later. The FIR was registered yesterday after her medical examination. The university today constituted a special committee to launch an extensive enquiry into the matter. Reacting strongly on the issue, the university spokesperson said, "The vice-chancellor has constituted a committee. The boy has been suspended with immediate effect. Further enquiry into the matter is now underway." The constituted committee also includes the warden of Brahamaputra Hostel and Ganga Hostel and is being chaired by Prof Shyamal Goswami. Speaking to The Tribune, Prof Goswami said, "The boy has been suspended. However, I reserve any comments on the issue." Another official on the committee said that the university will look into the campus security. After the MMS scandals surfaced in JNU, the authorities were quick to tighten the security, especially check the visitors' entry and exit from the campus. Currently, no visitors are allowed inside the university without a written log and the security staff confirming with the corresponding person in JNU, whom the visitor claims to meet. Entry of female students in boys' hostels, especially at night, had also been strictly prohibited and regular checks were maintained. The students' community on the other hand is shell shocked; however, most were quick to respond that a sole instance shouldn't be associated with the entire university's culture. The students' union was also under discussions till late evening on the matter. JNU Student Union president V Lenin Kumar said, "The union still hasn't decided its stand on the issue. By tomorrow, the union would have consulted everyone and then formally we will declare our position." |

"The girl was living at her boyfriend's house and his parents had informed the girl's family," claimed sources in the police. On returning, the girl had a heated argument with her family which turned ugly. "During the argument, the girl's brother attacked her with a kitchen knife. SAD (Delhi-UK) threatens govt against delay
in DSGMC poll
New Delhi, October 9 The court has directed the city government that the DSGMC election should be held before December 31. The government should not cross the date. If it is delayed, the SAD (Delhi-UK) will launch a movement against the government and meet the Sikh voters informing them that the election is being delayed intentionally by the government. "Lovely misguides the Chief Minister about the DSGMC election," said SAD (Delhi-UK) president Jasjit Singh. This is being delayed by the government as it is sure that SAD (Delhi) led by Paramjit Singh Sarna would lose the election. Sarna had got done a survey by a private company in his Punjabi Bagh ward. The survey report gives an indication that Sarna will lose the election. Jasjit stated that resolution passed by the Delhi government to amend the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Act, 1971, in collusion with Sarna and his brother and one of Delhi ministers - is a conspiracy to defer the gurdwara elections and maintain the possession of Sarna brothers upon the DSGMC. When asked the name of the minister, he named Arvinder Singh Lovely. He demanded that owing to the proposed amendment in the Gurdwara Act, Sarna should immediately be removed from the post of president of the DSGMC and an administrator of the Delhi government should be appointed in stead of him. |
Kejriwal is Cong agent: BJP
New Delhi, October 9 However, when pointed out that it is Kejriwal who has accused Robert Vadra of taking favours from realty major DLF and hence he could not be acting at the behest of the Congress, Goel only repeated his charge. "He is attacking parties and individuals as he is starting a political party," said Goel. Goel said that it was the large heartedness of BJP activists who had allowed Kejriwal to speak at the party event, but he, without caring about any social etiquette, asked what the Opposition had done to check the "wrongdoings" of the Sheila Dikshit government. "The BJP has always opposed any hike in power bills. We have held demonstrations in all parts of Delhi. We held a protest at Talkatora Stadium in which 2,000 resident welfare associations had participated. Who is Kejriwal to ask us what we have done in the past three years? He has entered the protest just three days back and restored two power connections and thinks that he is leading the movement," said Goel. "We have met the chairman of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) and submitted a memorandum, demanding a reduction in the power tariff. When Vijender Singh was the chairman of the DERC and had recommended that the power tariff should be reduced by 23 per cent, but his recommendation was not accepted, the BJP that had approached the court," he said. |

DUTA to begin hunger strike today
New Delhi, October 9 These closed doors and security personnel deployed around the complex cannot deter our confidence. Our actions will not disrupt classes as the interests of the students are paramount. This strike will be a shout out to all the teachers and students who have faced innumerable problems with the recent attitude of the administration," said Abha Dev Habib, a senior DUTA executive. "This mode, acknowledged as 'Satyagraha', is now our only option in DU where teachers are not being allowed to teach with any sense of ownership and belonging. DU semester results to come
within 15 days of exams
New Delhi, October 9 Following complaints of large-scale discrepancies in the results of the past two semesters, the university has come up with an evaluation schedule for the upcoming exam that will ensure timely declaration of the results. The vice-chancellor has assured that this time, the correction of copies will be error free. "The university has around 5 lakh students, which means that more than 25 lakh answersheets are corrected in an exam season. To make the correction error free, the copies will be scanned by three teachers. The papers will be checked under various clusters divided on the basis of North and South campuses," said Singh. The evaluation schedule, already on the university website, states that the correction has to done within four-six days after the completion of the examination process. The new schedule was proposed after the English department had to postpone this year's MA admission because of the delay in declaring the BA final year results. Further, the university has decided to do away with the practice of the students writing only the roll numbers on the
answersheets. Unlike before, now the identity of the students will be known to the teachers correcting the papers. The university has come up with a policy whereby all answersheets will have the names of the student, his/her father and college. Earlier, students used to write these details on a slip attached to the
answersheet. The slip was removed by the college before sending the papers for checking. Finally, the answersheets would have only the roll numbers of the students. "We will ensure that the evaluation is fair. The papers will be corrected at a centralised location. Each paper will be checked by three teachers. For example, if there are three answers in a sheet, every teacher will correct one each," said DS
Jaggi, officer on special duty, examination branch. |
