385 commercial vehicles challaned

To curb the tendency of plying unauthorised vehicles with incomplete documents and driving overloaded vehicles, the State Transport Authority, carried out intensive checking campaign of commercial vehicles recently. Over 1,900 transport vehicles were checked and 385 were challaned or impounded.

High drama was witnessed at the general hospital in Sector 6 this afternoon when a patient’s attendant was allegedly manhandled by a female laboratory technician here today. Yogita Gaba, a resident of Sector 7, Panchkula, had gone to the hospital to get the blood test report of her sister-in-law when she was allegedly slapped by the technician.

The student organisations demanded that the permission for holding the event should be cancelled.

The spiraling cooking gas prices might burn a hole in the pockets of Panjab University hostel residents with university authorities all set to hike the mess charges. The mess contractors have proposed a hike of Rs 5 per diet that presently costs Rs 24. There are eight boys’ and girls’ hostels with over 6,000 residents at Panjab University, who will have to face the brunt.

1 kg opium recovered
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 9
The district police has arrested five drug peddlers and recovered 1-kg opium and other contraband including tablets, capsules, smack and bottles of illegal whisky in separate incidents. One of the accused, arrested at a checkpost near Talania village, revealed that he used to purchase opium from a hotel near Shahabad Markanda in Haryana and sell it at higher rates in the area. He told the police that opium was being sold at “dhabas” on the GT Road in Haryana.

Accused Aman and Jasmer Singh being taken to a court in Panchkula on Tuesday The paternal uncle and brother of the Karnal girl who fell victim to honour killing were produced in court today and were sent to judicial custody. Jasmer Singh, the victim's paternal uncle, and Aman, her brother, were arrested yesterday evening by the Panchkula police.

2 convicted in Barwala shootout case, get 5-year imprisonment

Two accused in the Barwala shootout case have been awarded five year imprisonment. The case had come up for hearing today in the court of additional district and sessions judge Kanchan Mahi.

Chargesheet filed in Pooja murder case
Chandigarh, October 9
The UT police today filed a chargesheet in the Pooja murder case. The murder took place in July this year. The police filed a chargesheet under Section 302 of the IPC against Vajinder and Renu for the brutal murder of Pooja, who was Vajinder’s wife.
