New Delhi, October 16 It took two hours by the fire officials to douse the flames, said a senior official of the fire department. The blaze was reported from the 220 KV substation located near the Crowne Plaza hotel at Okhla. "A 100 MVA power transformer at our 220 KV substation Okhla caught fire at 2.28 pm. The fire tenders had to be called. As a precautionary measure, the substation was isolated from the grid," said a Delhi Transco spokesperson. "The restoration of power supply started from the alternative sources within 15 minutes of the incident and the supply was normalized by 4.00 pm," he said, adding that the load of the substation was diverted to 220 KV sub-stations at Masjid Moth, Mehrauli, Vasant Kunj, etc. "A total of 18 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The fire was completely doused by 4.35 pm. Its cause is being investigated. No one was reported injured in the incident," said the official. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze in two hours. "Sparks, flames and thick black smoke could be seen billowing out over the row of multi-storeyed buildings. One portion of the substation was completely gutted," added the official. |

New Delhi, October 16 The one-day strike was called by the Delhi Autorickshaw Sangh affiliated to the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh of the BJP. "A total number of 55,000 autos are registered in the national Capital. Most of them had been off the roads since early morning. Besides, 10,000 taxi drivers joined the strike. All the autos and taxis depend on CNG. If the gas is costly, the rate of auto fare should also be increased," said Rajendra Soni, president of the Delhi Autorickshaw Sangh. Roma, who lives in Sarita Vihar and works with a private firm in Connaught Place, said that today she had to face a lot of problems in commuting to her office as there was no auto on the roads. She had to take a Metro train that was packed to capacity. Delhi Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami said that the one-day strike called by auto unions had no impact on the normal life in the city. The traffic on the roads was normal like other days and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the city, added the minister. |

New Delhi, October 16 The incident took place at the Model Town Metro station this afternoon. He was admitted to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital where his condition is stated to be critical. "Ramneet Singh (35) tried to commit suicide. The driver of the train saw him jumping in front of the train. He applied emergency brake, but the train hit his body," the official added. Singh was returning home from Nanak Piau in Tilak Nagar along with his mother. He had an argument with his mother at the platform, after which he jumped in front of the train, said a source posted with the DMRC. Ramneet's mother Surjeet Kaur said that she kept holding his hand, but he pushed her and ran away on the platform. |

New Delhi, October 16 A senior police official said that two FIRs were lodged and one of the accused was arrested while a hunt is on for the other. The police official said that a 19-year-old girl hailing from Assam was raped by her employer. She was working as a domestic help. "The accused is a doctor and runs his lab in the Pitampura area. The girl had been working in the accused's house for the past few years," said the police. In another incident, a 16-year-old girl was raped by a businessman who called her on the pretext of an interview on Monday. "An FIR has been registered against the accused and a manhunt launched to nab him," said the police. |
