DU teachers sit on relay hunger strike
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 10
The indefinite relay hunger strike of the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) started today with 23 teachers from Ramjas, Daulat Ram, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce and Deen Dayal Upadhyay College sitting on strike alongside the DUTA president Amar Deo Sharma, secretary S. D. Siddiqui, former president Aditya Narayan Misra and Academic Council members A.K. Bhagi and M.R. Chikkara.

Throughout the day, hundreds of teachers thronged the venue of the strike to express their solidarity with the DUTA. Office-bearers of the DUTA and activists spoke in unison against what they referred to as a ‘hostage situation’ in the university, attributing the crisis to the vice-chancellor’s ‘coercive’ modes of governance within the university.

“We are fighting to safeguard at all costs the democratic rights of the university community and prevent any further demoralization of teachers, students and karamcharis,” said a senior DUTA official.

“A candlelight vigil will be observed on Friday from 5 pm to 6 pm, wherein the candles will symbolize the 4000-odd young teachers who continue teaching in an ad hoc capacity and despite being eligible, are faced with little prospect of regularization in the near future,” said DUTA president Amar Deo Sharma.

Tomorrow teachers from other colleges like Kirori Mal College, SGTB Khalsa College, Sri Venkateswara College, Ram Lal Anand College (E) and Aurobindo College (morning) are expected to carry on the relay hunger strike.

Relief for JNU students involved in pork festival

New Delhi, October 10
Relief arrived today for the Jawaharlal Nehru Univerity (JNU) students slapped with show-cause notices for planning to organise a beef and pork festival on campus last month. The festival was being planned around September-end, but was called off on the order of the Delhi High Court.

The administration today revoked the suspension of Patel Singh, an Mphil/Phd student at the Centre of African Studies, and withdrew show-cause notices served to three others— Abhay Kumar, Anandha Krishna Raj and Kusum Lala.

All these students were named members of the orgainsing committee of the beef and pork festival.

These students had initiated a discussion regarding the food culture at JNU under the banner of an organisation called The New Materialists as well as the Committee for the Democratic Right to Choice of Food (CDRCF).

After many meetings and discussions between the JNU administration and the students over the past two weeks, the proctorial enquiry was concluded today and all charges against the students were dropped.

The students have submitted undertakings to abide by the law of the land and refrain from organising such a festival in the future.

JNU vice-chancellor SK Sopory said, “Students have assured that they will not hold any such festivals in the future.”

“We received a letter from the administration today evening which says that all charges against the four students have been taken back,” said Abhay Kumar, CDRCF member.

However, the students said that discussions and public meetings about the “saffronisation” of the food culture at JNU would continue.

On receiving the show-cause notices, the students had approached the students’ union and the teachers’ association for support on the ground that why should they be punished when no such festival ever happened.

The students’ union approached the administration and demanded that no student should be punished due to “political pressures from outside the university”

But when the administration did not respond with a firm answer on the rollback of the enquiry, four students started an indefinite hunger strike on October 4. The hunger strike was supported by the JNU Students’ Union and the JNU Teachers’ Association.

Annashree Yojana to make Delhi hunger-free, says CM
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 10
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said that 'Dilli Annashree Yojana" would go a long way in making Delhi a hunger-free state.

There are around 4 lakh households with below the poverty line and Antyodaya Anna Yojna ration cards in Delhi. They get subsidised foodgrain under the public distribution system. But the government was keen to provide relief to those families which were not covered under the BPL and the AAY categories, said the Chief Minister.

Dikshit was speaking after inaugurating the renovated food and civil supplies office building at Balli Maran in the Walled City.

She said that under the scheme, a monthly food subsidy of Rs 600 will be transferred to the bank account of the senior-most female member of the household.

An outlay of Rs 150 crore has been provided in the current financial year to cover 2 lakh vulnerable households identified as per the approved parameters of Mission Convergence.

The amount would be utilized for purchase of foodgrains such as rice, wheat, sugar and other essential eatables.
