Beware! Sweets may leave bitter taste

Try to avoid temptation for sweets this festive season as they could be adulterated. Sweetmakers and confectioners are busy preparing sweets in advance to meet the demand. With such heavy demand during the festive season, adulterated sweets are sold in bulk in the market.

Health department collects 15 samples of food items in two days
Ludhiana, October 16
The Health Department collected seven samples of food items from different shops at Khanna today. A team comprising district health officer (DHO) Kulwinder Singh, district food safety officers Ravinder Garg and Harpreet Kaur collected the samples.

Colourful sweets can be harmful
Ludhiana, October 16
Bright coloured sweets may look attractive, but these colours are often harmful. The sweetmakers freely use food grade colours like carmine, sunset yellow and green and their concentration is often more than the permissible limit, especially during the festive season. The prescribed norm is 100 parts per million (PPM), but the concentration of colours is much more than that, say health officials.

Security beefed up, 1,000 policemen deployed

The police today deputed over 1,000 policemen in the city to beef up the security in the wake of the festive season. The move has been taken following intelligence inputs that anti-social elements would try to spoil the festivities in the city.

Kidnapping bid foiled
Ludhiana, October 16
High drama was witnessed at Kitchlu Nagar this evening when the residents staged a dharna against the police inaction that led to the escaping of kidnappers. The incident took place at Kitchlu Nagar when a man, aged around 45 years, grabbed the eight-year-old nephew of Congress councillor Sanjay Talwar.

Gang of copper wire thieves busted
Mandi Ahmedgarh, October 16
The Dehlon police has nabbed six persons of a notorious gang involved in stealing copper wire from electric motors and transformers installed in the fields. The gang was identified on the basis of information provided by some commuters who had seen some migrant labourers travelling with copper wire which instead of being good quality was being sold as scrap.

Muslim craftsmen busy preparing effigies of Ravana
Ludhiana, October 16
Ahead of the Dasehra festival, around 20 Muslim craftsmen are busy preparing the effigy of Ravana at Daresi ground. Some are busy making jewellery, some in stitching costumes, while the remaining are busy painting the faces of the effigies. One of these craftsmen Ahmed has been visiting the city for the last ten years to prepare these effigies that are burnt on the day of Dasehra. "Every year, I along with my group come here to prepare the effigy. This work gives me immense pleasure," he says.

35 colleges take part in PTU youth fest

State PWD minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon today urged his staff to step out of their offices and pay field visits so that the development projects could be completed on time. MC to put in efforts for twin-city agreement

The Ludhiana municipal corporation will be putting in efforts to tie up with the London Borough of Hounslow (UK) so that a twin-city agreement can be reached between the two cities. Hounslow Mayor Pritam Singh Grewal, who belongs to the city, today held a meeting with his Ludhiana counterpart Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria in this regard.

Traffic comes to a halt on National road

Date for filing service tax return extended
Ludhiana, October 16
The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) has extended the date of submission of service tax for the period April 1, 2012, to 30 June, 2012. The last date for the submission of return for this quarter has been extended from October 25 to November 25.

MLA's dog goes missing

Ludhiana MLA Ranjit Dhillon was in for a shock today when his favourite pet went missing. Soon, the security personnel went in search for the dog, but to no avail. The CCTV camera footage showed that a woman took away the pug.

Security guard fell from rooftop: Police

The 35-year-old security guard, Anoop Kumar, who was found dead outside the HDFC Bank on Mall Road, reportedly died after falling from the top floor of the building. The police said this came to light after questioning of around 20 persons who were residing along with him in the building.

Decomposed body found
Mandi Ahmedgarh, October 16
A badly decomposed body of an unidentified person was found alongside a link road near Sarhin village on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road near here today. The body, packed in a jute bag, was spotted by the staff of a marriage palace, after it started emitting foul smell. It was sent for post mortem by the Dehlon police.

NRI commits suicide
Phillaur, October 16
A non-resident Indian, Karnail Singh, reportedly committed suicide by consuming celphos tablets at his house in Loh Garh village last night. Satish, son of the deceased, told the police that when his father had gone abroad a few years back, his mother had fallen in love with another person.

Rs 8.5 lakh, 500 gm gold burgled

Unidentified miscreants decamped with Rs 8.5 lakh, gold ornaments and gold biscuits weighing approximately 500 gms in an hour’s gap when the family was away on the first day of Navratras at the Pritam Nagar locality today.
