Ramlila Maidan rally
New Delhi, November 4 A
majority of the people were from the Congress-ruled states--Haryana and
Rajasthan. Those from Haryana were quite visible as they were sporting
pink turbans and were addressed by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda
as the "army of Sonia Gandhi". Having seen the rush, Hooda
termed the rally "rela". The people came to Ramlila Grounds
in buses and other vehicles. These vehicles were later parked near Mata
Sundary College, causing major traffic jams when the rally ended at
about 1 pm. Even the VVIP vehicles having red and blue beacons were
caught in the jams. The same was the situation towards Delhi Gate as
most of the heavy vehicles were parked at Rajghat. When asked about the
pink turbans, many visitors from Haryana said that they were given to
them by their local leaders. Surender Singh from Rohtak said, "Hooda
has done a commendable job in the state. We have come to attend the
rally on a call given by the state Congress party. We left our houses
early morning and were given refreshments on the way to Delhi. Now, we
will be given lunch in the buses." Rajbir Singh who was from
Mahendergarh district said that the Congress had made arrangements for
TATA SUMO, Scorpio and buses to bring the people from different
districts of the state. Nasim and his group from Bharatpur in Rajasthan
said about 50 people came to the rally on the request of a local Muslim
leader who was directed by the state party high command to bring two
buses to Delhi. On the condition of anonymity, a bus transporter of
Rajasthan said that he was forced by a transport department official to
drive the people to Delhi. He said that the people of Rajasthan were not
happy with the policies of Congress government in the state. In the next
assembly election, it would be difficult by the party to come to power,
the transporter said. |

New Delhi, November 4 Located between the two busiest roads of the City Zone, dust, pollution and traffic noise are the main concerns of the craftswomen who complain about lack of facilities at the place. The stalls built at the Haat are four-side open with no proper arrangement to display the items. "These stalls are open on all sides. So, there is no safety of items. They will be spoiled if it rains," said Basheeran Banu, who had come from Rajasthan to sell Kota silk saree and suits. Built at a cost of more than Rs 4 crore, the Haat is constructed over the multi-level parking at Asaf Ali Marg near Delhi Gate. The artisans said that their items are at risk as there is no storage space except an underground cabin inside each stall which remains damp. "We cannot keep our goods here. We have to pack them all daily and take them away with us. The underground space provided for storage is filled with rain water," said Banu. Another artisan from Daryaganj, Farzana, who was selling items of 'zari and zardozi' work, said that this place is not fit for putting up delicate and sensitive items. "Our work involves handwoven embroidery and it takes months to complete one small item. But since the stalls are open, dust comes from all the sides and spoil the items," said Farzana. Even the basic facility of drinking water is lacking in the state-of-the-art Mahila Haat. "We are buying water from outside. The water coming from taps here is not fit for drinking. This is the basic necessity that should have been ensured by the authorities," said Madhu from Najafgarh who had put up a stall for jewellery. For the craftswomen who have come from other states, the expenses on accommodation eat into their earnings. "There is no arrangement for stay. I have come from Rajasthan and staying in a 'dharamshala' where I am paying Rs 300 to Rs 400 daily," said Farzana. The Haat was inaugurated after missing several deadlines, which escalated the cost of the project from Rs 2 crore to Rs 4 crore. The project was initially announced in 2009 by the then Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra, but it got delayed due to faulty designs and objections by the local bodies involved. The erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi even constituted a sub-committee to look into the viability of the project. The committee is believed to have raised certain objections regarding the design of the Haat, though the project was passed later on. The Haat has 39 stalls for the women artisans who could sell their products. The stalls will be allocated for 15 days at a rate of Rs 90 per day. |
