Despite ban, sale of gutka continues
Ludhiana, November 4
Despite the Punjab Government having banned the sale, storage and manufacture of gutka and pan masala in the state, the sale of these products goes on unabated in the city. The only difference is that while earlier vendors used to display these products in their stalls, now they keep these hidden and sell these on the black market.

Smuggler held with 30 boxes of liquor
Ludhiana, November 4
The city police has arrested a suspected liquor smuggler and seized 30 boxes of liquor from his possession. Harbans Singh, in charge of the anti-narcotic cell, said the accused, Satvir Singh Shantty, was arrested while his accomplice Iqbal Singh, alias Kala, managed to escape.

Head Constable among 2 arrested with liquor
Ludhiana, November 4
The city police has arrested two persons, including a former personal security guard of former Chief Parliamentary Secretary and SAD leader Madan Lal Bagga, on a charge of liquor smuggling.

Satjot Nagar residents threaten stir
Ludhiana, November 4
As many as 84 residents of Satjot Nagar have expressed concern over the cancellation of their mutation deeds by the district administration and have threatened to launch an agitation in this regard. The residents rued that about three years ago, the mutation deeds of their residences/plots had been cancelled.

Despite a ban, stubble burning in fields by farmers continues to play havoc with the lives of lakhs of residents in and around the city. Despite organising awareness campaigns to apprise farmers of the health hazards due to stubble burning, the illegal practice goes on unabated here.

2 killed, 3 hurt in road mishap

Two persons were killed and three others injured when the Toyota Innova they were travelling in was hit by a vehicle near the Sanmati Government College for Science and Research, Jagraon, yesterday night.

Bus falls into ditch, 10 hurt
Mandi Ahmedgarh, November 4
Passengers of a private bus, had a miraculous escape when the bus plunged into a ditch near the Sirhind canal on Sunday. The accident could have been tragic, had the bus turned towards the canal. About ten persons were injured in the incident.

High drama prevailed at a wedding exhibition, organised at a hotel on Hambran road after the exhibitors indulged into an argument with the director of the exhibition. Health Department collects 4 samples of patisa

The district health department today collected four samples of patisa, which was being prepared in unhygienic conditions. Food Safety Officer, Ludhiana, Ravinder Garg, said, "We took two samples of simple and badam patisa from Rameshwar Patisa Factory, Guru Ram Dass Nagar, Tajpur Road, Bhamiyan.

A state-level inter-college Punjabi Ghazal singing competition was organised by Punjabi Sahit Akademi at Punjabi Bhawan here today. Over 10 colleges from the state participated in the competition. Master Tara Singh College for Women, Ludhiana, bagged the overall trophy.

Six drug peddlers arrested in khanna

The Khanna police claimed to have arrested six persons and has recovered 8 kg opium and 1.5 kg drug powder from their possession. The alleged accused have been identified as Suba Singh, a resident of Hargobindpur Sahib of Batala district, while Kuldeep Singh, Neetu, Gurdeesh Singh, Sanjeev Kumar and Guddi, all the residents of Khanna.

Rape victim dies, two arrested

Surjit Kaur (16), who was allegedly raped by Money Singh with the connivance of his uncle Amarjit Singh in Indira Colony, Phillaur, on November 1 died in the Civil Hospital,Jalandhar, on Saturday evening.
