Mayor pulls up MC staff
Ludhiana, November 9
The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation officials remained at the receiving end as Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria conducted a surprise check on the Ferozepur Road here today. The Mayor visited the road to check the ongoing cleanliness drive in the city. He showed his displeasure over the work.

108 ambulance staff go on strike
Ludhiana, November 9
After courting controversy over the issue of the government's move of paying Rs 24 crore to Ziqitza Healthcare Limited in the first year of operations, the 108 emergency ambulance service, which has become a household name, is again in news with around 100 of its staff from across the state going on a strike here today against the alleged highhandedness of some of their senior employees.

Six samples of sweets collected
Ludhiana, November 9
A team of the Health Department today collected samples of six sweets from peripheral areas. Kulwinder Singh, DHO, said: "We collected two samples of ‘khoya burfi’ from Naamdhari Sweets and Harpreet Sweets at Bhaini Sahib. Two samples of sweets were collected from Kalra Sweets, Machhiwara."

Fire brigade gets 15 drivers
Ludhiana, November 9
To make sure that the fire brigade in the city meets every challenge during Divali, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has recruited an additional workforce of 15 drivers. These drivers will assist the fire brigade officials till Divali.

Child labour: 5 kids rescued
Ludhiana, November 9
Cracking a whip on factory owners indulging in child labour, a team of the social securities department, along with the police, raided a factory unit at the Cheema Chowk and Kalyan Nagar in the Daresi area and rescued five children who were forced to work under inhuman conditions.

Vipul Mehta, winner of the latest season of television reality show, “Indian Idol”, was in the city today on a personal visit. The euphoria of the victory and shows in India and abroad have kept him busy all these days. He was elated to find tremendous popularity of the show even in Bangladesh, Nigeria and Thailand. He says: "People asked me to sing songs that I sang during the show". "There was a gathering of 10,000 people in Lagos in Nigeria and he performed especially for a Divali programme recently," he says, adding, "I was delighted to meet Punjabis there as well".

Manch begins signature drive

During a nationwide signature campaign, launched by Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM), to expose the alleged fallacy of report of the UPA-appointed interlocutors on Jammu & Kashmir issue, a signature campaign got underway in Jagraon today.

The menace of dangling electrical wires at Subash Nagar area near Jodhewal Basti has devastated the life a poor migrant woman Meera and her 17-year-old daughter, Sita. It was on October 6 that Meera Devi, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, who was working as a domestic help at the house of Laddi at New Subash Nagar, received serious burn after coming in contact with high-tension electrical wires.

Pensioners hold dharna

On the call of Pensioners Joint Front, the pensioners of Sub-Division, Payal, held a rally and dharna in front of the office of the SDM, Payal, against the callous attitude of the government for not accepting the long pending genuine demands of the  pensioners.

Global diabetes awareness walk held

To commemorate the twin occasions of World Diabetes Day and Children’s Day, Deep Hospital, Ludhiana, with support of World Diabetes Foundation (WDF), Denmark organised a “Diabetes Awareness Walk”. It was headed with “WDF logo “along-with global mark of “Unite for Diabetes” where whole world joins hands to fight against Diabetes.

Horticultural congress concludes

The fifth Indian Horticultural Congress on the theme "Horticulture for Food and Environment Security", organised by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in association with the Horticultural Society of India (HSI), concluded here today. A detailed farmer-scientist interaction was held, in which members of the PAU Kisan Club, progressive farmers of the state and farm experts from prominent agri-institutions participated.

Forum slaps fine on car dealer

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered a dealer of Maruti Udyog Ltd and its regional supervisor to pay compensation of Rs 20,000 to an aggrieved consumer for inordinate delay in a delivery of Swift VDI car.

Woman injured in accident on Dugri road
Ludhiana, October 9
A woman was injured while another person had a miraculous escape after their moped hit the backside of a private bus at Dugri road here today. The injured woman was rushed to a hospital by the passers-by. Her condition is stated to be critical.

Infant found dead
Ludhiana, November 9
There seem to be no stopping of throwing infants in water bodies. Barely two months after the death of a newborn child, which was thrown in the Sirhind Feeder Canal, allegedly by the relatives of an unmarried girl, another body of an infant was recovered from the Budha Nullah today.


 

Malwa Sr Sec School lift Divali Hockey Cup
Doraha, November 9
The hockey team of Malwa Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, grabbed the Diwali Hockey Trophy by defeating Guru Nanak Model Senior Secondary School in the 14th Inter-school Diwali Hockey Tournament, organised in the memory of Dr Ishwar Singh, the founder president of the Guru Nanak National College in the Guru Nanak Stadium today.
