Councillor kills daughter, self
New Delhi, November 8 Additional Commissioner of Police (west Delhi) V. Renganathan said that the police got a call of the incident around 7.30 am. "It seems Satyam strangled her daughter Vanshika and then hanged herself from the ceiling fan on the first floor of her house. Her daughter was rushed to Sataybhama Hospital where she was declared brought dead by the doctors. The police has not recovered any suicide note from the spot," said a senior police official. An SDM-level inquiry has also been initiated into the matter, he added. Satyam, a Congress councillor, used to live in Ahir Mohalla along with her husband and in-laws. She won the corporation election in April this year. Satyam's family members alleged that she was killed for dowry. Her brother and mother have alleged that Satyam was tortured by her husband and in-laws for dowry. “They were demanding Rs 10 lakh. Even though she won the election and became a councillior, her in-laws used to harass her for dowry. She was forced into politics,” alleged Satyam's brother Prashant. Her in-laws were not at home when she was found dead. However, sources in the Congress said that she was not happy with her political career and wanted to resign from the post. Satyam, a postgraduate in English, was married to Pawan Yadav, a government teacher, around three years ago. Her father-in-law Lala Ram Yadav holds a senior post in Block Congress Committee. Pawan refuted the dowry allegations made by her family members. "According to the first list of nominated members declared by the Congress on March 25, Ramesh Devi, a resident of Nilothi, was given the ticket instead of Satyam. But later, Lala Ram, using his political connections, managed to switch her with his daughter-in-law Satyam, even as she did not want to contest the election," said a Congress councillor. It is also believed that her in-laws were using her for political purpose due to which she was living under depression. "She had never been a part of politics before contesting the election. No one knew her in the area. It was only because of her father-in-law that she was made to fight the election. She was opposing many things but in-laws did not pay heed to her problems," said party workers. "It seems she hung herself after killing her daughter. But we cannot confirm anything before the postmortem," said V Renganathan. A case against Pawan, his father and mother has been registered. — IANS |

Jamia gets Rs 26 cr to set up girl hostel
New Delhi, November 8 This is by far one of the biggest grants that the university has received from the UGC for expanding living facilities for students, especially girls, on campus. "Under the current admission policy, 10 % of the total number of seats in each course is reserved for women applicants who are Muslims, which means a higher enrollment of girl students in the university. Additional hostel facilities for girl students will ensure that girls coming from different parts of the country to study at Jamia will be able to find residential accommodation on the campus," said the university spokesperson. "Presently, the university has five girls' hostels which have a total capacity of over 500. This additional amount of 26 crore will also go a long way in expanding the existing hostel facilities for girls," the spokesperson added. |
DSGMC secretary submits memo to LG
New Delhi, November 8 Harmit Singh said that being general secretary of the DSGMC he had power to clear all the checks pertaining to the committee. But it is not followed in the committee. "If he declines to clear a check, cash transaction is made without my permission. Rules and regulation mentioned in the Delhi Gurdwara Committee Act is not followed that requires monitoring of day-to-day functioning of the DSGMC," he said. He said that the executive body of the gurdwara committee had been dissolved without giving reason following which those who were close to the president of the committee were misusing their powers. Harmit also mentioned about the trust of Bala Sahib Gurdwara constituted by the DSGMC led by Paramjit Singh Sarna. SAD (Delhi-UK) Jasjit Singh demanded that the elections should be held within the given time. If it is delayed, he will file a case of contempt of court as last month the court had directed the government that election should be held before December 31, 2012. He said as the DSGMC president knew that he would lose the election, he was trying to delay it by using different ways. |

New Delhi, November 8 The man identified as Mursalim Shaikh was arrested last night, after the Indigo Airlines flight- 6E 196, in which he was travelling, landed at domestic airport, Delhi, at 7.30 pm. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Indira Gandhi International Airport), JS Deswal said that Shaikh was arrested under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. "He was today remanded to judicial custody for one day. He did not attempt to hijack the plane. It was a spontaneous act and not a premeditated one. The person (Shaikh) is not mentally sound," added the official. Shaikh is a used-cars dealer based in Mumbai. Yesterday afternoon he had taken the Indigo Airlines flight from Mumbai to Delhi. The police said that he was sitting in a posture that made his male co-passenger feel uncomfortable. When he objected, Shaikh started an argument with him. An airhostess after hearing the commotion intervened to stop the argument. The police said that she tried calming Shaikh, but when she turned around he slapped her. Shaikh apparently became more violent and other passengers sitting near him stood up and overpowered him. "He was abusing and shouting at people. He was trying to intimidate them," said another police official. After the crew and passengers overpowered Shaikh, the pilot landed the plane at the Delhi airport. Central Industrial Security Force personnel caught him and handed over to the police. A case was registered on the complaint of the airhostess and he was arrested. |
