Combating salinity: B’desh minister visits CSSRI
Karnal, November 8 Matia Chowdhury, who visited the Central Soil Salinity Research Institute (CSSRI) here to interact with soil scientists, said that the problem was similar in the Sunderbans area falling partly in Bangladesh and partly in West Bengal. She said coordinated efforts of scientists could help Bangladesh reclaim its one-million-hectare salinity-affected areas along “Scientific and technical cooperation in research, development of salinity and drought-resistant varieties of crops and incorporating new programmes in the ongoing research can be useful in enhancing farm productivity and livelihood security of the farming community of the saline areas of India and Bangladesh,” she said. “We have a long coastal belt and about one million hectares of area is saline. In order to combat salinity, we are visiting the CSSRI as the institute has done a lot of work in tackling the problem. We hope that India and Bangladesh would soon find solutions to problems of farmers in saline areas and work collectively in the Sunderbans,” she said. Dr S K Ambast of the CSSRI, who visited Bangladesh for three days, said Bangladesh has more salt-tolerant crop varieties than India and both nations could benefit mutually. Matia Chowdhury was accompanied by the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, Tariq A. Karim, among other officers. Dr D.K.Sharma, director of the CSSRI, made a presentation on institute technologies and their impact on farmers. |
Sacked Maruti staff end fast
Gurgaon, November 8 The strike ended with a protest rally wherein the recently constituted seven-member provisional committee presented a memorandum to local member of the legislative assembly Sukhbir Khataria demanding reinstatement of 500 workers who were sacked after the July 18 violence which left the company’s human resource manager dead. The committee, which has been formed to compensate the now defunct union, said it was forced to go to Kataria as neither the management nor the local administration had shown any keenness to hear it. “All that we have got is apathy as nobody cares about our families, our future and troubles even though we are not at fault. We were in front of the DC’s office for one and half days, but the officials didn’t care to give us a minute even. The fast has concluded but not our mission of seeking justice,” said Imaan Khan, member of the newly formed committee. The management has, meanwhile, refused point blank to accept any of their demands. The protest was supported by the All-India Trade Union of Congress (AITUC) and Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and independent unions of companies in the Manesar-Gurgaon industrial belt. Khan said in addition to this, 149 workers who are in jail and at least 100 workers at the Manesar plant were also on hunger strike. Three demands have been laid down by the protesting workers: an impartial inquiry into the violence at the plant on July 18, the release of the 149 workers who have been jailed, and reinstatement of the 546 permanent workers who have been sacked. |
