Residents stall move to shift shelter home inmates
Jalandhar, June 12 Hundreds of Sikh hardliners, politicians and local residents gathered outside the home in support of Bhai Ghanaiya Charitable Trust that runs the home. Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti and ADCP Gagan Ajit Singh reached the site with a large posse of police force. Sources said the administration had received orders from the Social Welfare Department, instructing that the centre be shut as it was not duly registered as per the Juvenile Justice Act: 2000. Isha Kalia, SDM, said during a surprise visit to the home on June 5, some violations were detected. No FIRs were being lodged with the police as and when the home received a new inmate. The order said of the 60 girls at the home, “21 below the age of six be shifted to Pushpa Gujral Nari Niketan and those above 21 be sent to Gandhi Vanita Ashram till the provisions of the Act are complied with.” The managing trustee of the home, Parkash Kaur, was away to Dalhousie. The home had shot into limelight recently with Nita Ambani paying a visit with goodies for children lodged there. In the face of stiff resistance, the administration finally decided that the inmates would remain at the home under the supervision of the Child Development Officer and her assistants. “No one from outside, not even the trustees will be allowed to enter the premises. Additional staff from the Social Welfare Office will be called for inspection of records,” the DC ordered. The commotion outside distressed toddlers lodged on the first floor of the home and most of them started crying.
