Army remembers Lt Navdeep Singh
Tibri Cantt , June 7 A bust of the Gurdaspur-born soldier, who laid down his life on August 20 last year while fighting insurgents in Gurez sector of North Kashmir was also unveiled by Maj General Anirudh Chakravarty, General-Officer-Commanding (GOC), 15th Infantry Division. Officers from the civil administration, including the Deputy Commissioner Dr Abhinav Trikha, and District an Sessions Judge K.K Garg were also present at the ceremony. The parents of the deceased soldier broke down repeatedly and had to be consoled by senior army officers. In the citation, Maj Gen Chakravarty observed, “Lt Navdeep sacrificed his life because he knew that the safety, honour and welfare of the country comes first, always and every time. He also knew that the honour, welfare and comfort of the men he commanded came next”. His father Joginder Singh recalled the confidence his son exuded a day before he laid down his life. “He spoke to me on the phone. The signal was weak but his voice was strong. He never knew that he would not live to see another day. Indeed, destiny follows no predictable pattern. My son was destined for bigger things in life had death not stepped in”. The officer’s sister Navjot Kaur, who is pursuing graduation in english from GNDU, summed it aptly by saying, “The fear of death follows from the fear of life. An army officer, who lives life fully, is prepared to lay down his life anytime. And that is what my brother did. Life without him is a big challenge. But I know that life's challenges are not supposed to paralyse you, they are supposed to make you stronger and discover who you are”. The whole ceremony was drenched in emotion, passion and pathos. “Any one who might have looked into the glazed eyes of a soldier like Navdeep dying in a battlefield will always think hard about starting a war,” said the proud father. |

Promotions to PCS cadre awaited
Nawanshahr, June 7 According to sources, the names of 36 DROs and Tehsildars for elevating 12 of them as PCS were forwarded to the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) in August, last year. Similarly, the government recommended the names of 15 AETcs and ETOs and 9 DDPOs and BDPOs for elevation of 5 and 3 of them, respectively, to PCS cadre. Ram Singh, president, Punjab Revenue Officers Association, demanded that the quota of filling PCS cadre from various departments should be utilised immediately for ensuring effective administrative work. The inordinate delay in effecting the promotions to PCS cadre has been causing hindrances in implementing the administrative reforms at the grassroots level. "Presently there is a short of about 100 PCS officers despite the fact that the state government has re-employed 40 PCS officers on contract basis after their retirement", he said adding that it was a welcome step on the part of the state
government. |
