Labour, farmer unions’ agitations on June 5

Jalandhar, May 27
A call for statewide agitations at the district centres on June 5 was given by 17 labour and farmer unions of the state here today.

The labour and farmer unions decided to protest against the government inaction regarding the demands earlier made by them.

The unions had demanded restoring of connections of labourers who had not been able to pay their bills, free motor connections for farmers with more than 5 acres of land, foregoing of the electricity bills and pending dues of labourers, withdrawing cases lodged against them during agitations and provision of atta-dal-kerosene oil on subsidised rates.

But going by the inaction of the SAD-BJP government despite an agreement between the government and labour unions on the issue, the unions have planned an agitation on June 5.

Union leaders said while the government had agreed to the demands, the various administrations were refusing to implement them.

They condemned the government’s decision of procuring a Muridpur village land in Bhogpur, where 23 labourer families presently resided, rather than allotting residential plots to the labourers.

They also called for an agitation in case any any action was taken against the Muridpur labourers by the administration on May 29.

District president of the Pendu Mazdoor Union Hans Raj Pabwan, Darshan Nahar of the Dehati Mazdoor Sabha and Harmesh Malri of the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union were present.
