Teachers'  recruitment Scam
CBI raid at ex-DPI (Schools) residence
Chandigarh, May 27
In a significant development, a team of the Delhi branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today raided the Sector 23 residence of former UT DPI (Schools) Samwartak Singh in connection with the infamous teachers recruitment scam that rocked the UT Education Department in 2009 involving recruitment of 536 teachers.

Ignoring the MC order, a man waters plants at Sector 8 in Chandigarh on Sunday. Ignoring public inconvenience due to water shortage during peak summer, the municipal corporation (MC) has finally woken up from slumber to repair damaged water pipelines to provide uninterrupted water supply to residents. A majority of the residential areas of the city have been facing acute water shortage and low pressure for the last one month.

No respite from heat wave

The residents in the tricity region continued to face severe heat wave conditions, with mercury hovering around 40 degrees Celsius.

An ongoing probe by the UT estate office to verify the possession of original allottees of EWS houses in the city has indicated large-scale sale and renting out of dwelling units.

Black film removal from vehicles heartening
Years have passed since the vehicles with totally dark film on windows have been running on city roads. Nobody ever cared to put any check on them because of an inherent perception of power attachment with those in the passenger seat. No matter there was a particular percentage of the darkness that was allowed, but, I have seen cars even with 100 per cent tinted glasses running unchecked on city roads.

Diarrhoea cases on the rise
Panchkula, May 27
In view of the severe heatwave prevailing in the region, more than a dozen cases a day of diarrhoea are reported at the Sector-6 General Hospital. Though no case has been reported from the town, 12 to 15 cases from villages in and outside the town and various slums are reported daily.

Locals up in arms against ill-maintained park
Mohali, May 27
Residents of a locality in Sector 68, located near Kumbhra village, are up in arms over the ill-maintenance of the park in the area. The park, which is meant for the residents of the area, is being used by people from Kumbhra village for tying up their cattle.

10,000 appear in CET for PU courses

Over 10,000 applicants today appeared in the common entrance test (CET) for various courses at Panjab University (PU). The test was conducted in different examination centres in PU and various city colleges.

Clash averted at PU
Chandigarh, May 27
Even though the student elections at Panjab University will be held after three-months, the student organisations have started gearing-up. A major clash between the two organisations over pasting posters in the campus was averted early this morning. The students managed to flee after the PU security reached the scene.

PEC students clash, 6 held
Chandigarh, May 27
High drama prevailed outside the Kurukshetra hostel of PEC last night after a clash between two groups of students was reported. Following this, six students were arrested by the police as a preventive measure. The students were later released after producing them in court.

A pregnant woman was run over by a dumper near Kalalti village in the district. The deceased was identified as Anju (23), a resident of Landa village.

The body of a Zambian was found close to the National Highway No.1 near Ambala Cantonment this morning. The police identified the deceased as Mkandawire Lyon, a resident of Zambia, from his passport.

The Pinjore police has arrested three persons in connection with the death of a woman under mysterious circumstances. Police sources revealed that Pinki's mother-in-law Kamla, husband Vinod and brother-in-law Himmat Lal were arrested.

Nikhita Dhiman of Divine Light Public School, Sirhind, has topped in the district, scoring a CGPA of 10, whereas Mankiran of the same school stood second by getting 9.8 CGPA. GK Tayagi, principal of the school, told that the result of the school has been 100% with a majority of the students getting CGPA 9.

Lack of civic amenities bane of patiala

The government has failed to perform its duty in providing civic amenities to the people. What to talk about new projects, the present house couldn’t even resolve the problem of the frequent chocking of the sewerage system in many city areas. There is a problem of sewerage blocking reported every other day, but the civic body has not done anything to address the problem.

Candidates deface city will election hoardings 
Patiala, May 27
With just two weeks left for the polling in the 50 municipal wards of Patiala Municipal Corporation, candidates of different political parties, particularly the SAD-BJP and Congress, have started defacing the royal city by putting up hoardings, in gross violation of the prescribed norms. A visit to different city areas has brought to light that candidates have put up hoardings in the wards from where they are contesting the elections, but so far the corporation functionaries, as well the Patiala administration, has not taken any action for the removal of the hoardings.

Youth held with pistol on PU campus
Chandigarh, May 27
The member of a student organisation was arrested by the police with a countrymade pistol and four live cartridges from the Panjab University (PU) campus today.

Rape, murder accused held
Mohali, May 27
The Mohali police today arrested Manoj Kumar for the rape and murder of a six-year-old at Bhago Majra village on Friday. SP (City) Harpreet Singh said Manoj was trying to flee the town when he was nabbed. The victim was the daughter of a tea vendor, running his business at the site.

Open speed skating championship ends

On the concluding day of the ongoing Manav Mangal School Open Speed Skating Championship, Yuvraj Arora, Adheesh Verma and Manas Arora won top positions in the Bossy (U-4) Quads event, while in the girls category, Mahira Nandvani and Saina Mehndiratta finished as winner and runners-up, respectively.
