NRI arrested for murdering wife

The Phagwara police has arrested a US-based NRI, identified as 41-year-old Vijay Swan, a resident of Chhabewal village in Hoshiarpur district, on the charges of murdering his wife Sita Rani on March 21.

Action sought against sand mafia
Nawanshahr, June 2
Activists of the District Congress Committee led by its president Satvir Singh Palli Jhikki submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner, urging him to take immediate action against the sand mafia indulged in illegal mining of sand in the district.

Three robbers arrested
Hoshiarpur, June 2
The district police today arrested three robbers, identified as Vijay Kumar, alias Bhola, of local Kache Quarter, Shastri Nagar, Gurinder Singh, of Mona Kalan and Sham Lal, of local Premgarh and recovered a motorcycle, Rs 10,000, a sickle, two swords, a pair of gold earrings and six mobile phones snatched by them.

NRI arrested for murdering wife

Phagwara, June 2
The Phagwara police has arrested a US-based NRI, identified as 41-year-old Vijay Swan, a resident of Chhabewal village in Hoshiarpur district, on the charges of murdering his wife Sita Rani on March 21.

Phagwara SP Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh said the couple was married 11 years ago and were residing in New York and came to India in February. Family members of the deceased NRI woman alleged that Vijay Swan used to harass his wife as he was the nominee of her insurance policies. The family members said the accused wanted to grab the insurance money of more than Rs 14 crore.

The SP said the couple came to Khalian village in Phagwara sub-division stayed at Sita Rani's parents house. The SP said the accused allegedly gave Sita Rani some poisonous substance in night. The SP said samples have been sent for examination.

The Phagwara police has registered case under Section 302 of the IPC on May 31 againt the accused and acting on a tip-off, SHO Rawalpindi, Shivkamal Dev Singh nabbed the accused near Panchhat bus stand yesterday.

The accused was remanded to two-day police custody.

Action sought against sand mafia

Activists of the District Congress Committee led by its president Satvir Singh Palli Jhikki submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner, urging him to take immediate action against the sand mafia indulged in illegal mining of sand in the district.

“The illegal mining of sand in the district has not been causing loss to the state exchequer, but also damaging Dhussi bundh along the Sutlej,” said a Congress leader, adding that the residents of a number of villages in the vicinity of Sutlej, including Bharta Kalan, Talwandi Sibbu, Lallewal, Dariyapur, have also been demanding imposition of ban on plying of heavy vehicles carrying sand from the river embankments and link roads as these have been damaging the embankments on both sides of the river as well as the link roads. Residents of villages in the bet area have constantly been living under the threat of floods due to damage being caused by the sand mafia to the embankments of the river.

A couple of weeks ago, truck operators also submitted a memorandum to the Director Industries and the Deputy Commissioner demanding a probe into the alleged highhandedness of a mining contractor. The truck operators had accused the mining contractor of charging Rs 800 per 100 CFT of sand instead of Rs 260 per 100 CFT fixed by the govt.

Three robbers arrested

Hoshiarpur, June 2
The district police today arrested three robbers, identified as Vijay Kumar, alias Bhola, of local Kache Quarter, Shastri Nagar, Gurinder Singh, of Mona Kalan and Sham Lal, of local Premgarh and recovered a motorcycle, Rs 10,000, a sickle, two swords, a pair of gold earrings and six mobile phones snatched by them.

Jagmohan Singh, DSP, Chabbewal, said the police intercepted the trio at a check post at Kahri crossing near Mona Kalan village. During interrogation, the robbers confessed to their involvement in 21 cases of robbery in the town, Kahri Sahri, Mona Kalan, Pandori and Harkowal areas of the district.

The police recovered a motorcycle in a maize field at Mona Kalan village. They confessed that they had snatched cash, gold jewellery, mobile phones and motorcycles from various persons, including women.

All 137 safai karamcharis working on contractual basis in the Municipal Corporation would be regularised in a week’s time, said Chief Parliamentary Secretary (Local Bodies) Som Parkash while talking to newsmen here recently.

He said instructions in this regards were issued to Municipal Corporation Commissioner Satish Kumar Singla. He said sanitation work would soon be initiated in every ward of the corporation.
