Help organises awareness camp

Nawanshahr, June 11
A local NGO - Human Empowerment League of Punjab (HELP) organised an awareness camp for educating the people regarding Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 here on Monday.

The people from Nawanshahr and Hoshiarpur districts participated in the camp. HELP activist, Parvinder Singh Kittna gave valuable tips to the people for making proper use of the RTI Act to fight against the injustice, corruption, discrimination and lack of transparency in delivery of the various public utility services by different government departments.

The HELP activists helped as many as 20 people to write applications for seeking information from different government departments on the occasion. Giving details, Kittna said that an applicant from village Simbli, Hoshiarpur district sought information regarding ‘Action Taken Report' on her repeated applications, complaining encroachment on her land from the Deputy Commissioner and the SSP of Hoshiarpur district.

Labourers block roads

Phagwara, June 11
Hundreds of labourers held a demonstration and blocked the roads opposite to the local ESI Hospital on national highway.

They all were protesting against the careless working of the staff at ESI. A laborer of JCT Mills identified as Ashok Kumar breathed his last after few days of the high fever today.

The protesters alleged that the ESI staff did not bother to look into the seriousness of the illness. JCT Mills Assistant General Manager, Rajiv Kapoor, rushed to the spot to console the family , as he was the lone earner in the family.

Later, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Som Parkash reached the blocked site and assured the protesters that justice will follow soon. hence, the blockade was lifted after 45 minutes.

Panjab varsity student shines

Madhuri SharmaPathankot, June 11
Madhuri Sharma of Pathankot, student of University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University Chandigarh, has been invited by University of Tromso, Norway to present a research paper on Norwegian dramatist, Henrik Ibsen.

Madhuri has been awarded international scholarship for her legal perspectives of Henrik Ibsen’s oeuvre which focuses upon the travesty of justice to women in the male-dominated society. — OC
