Sibbal ridiculed for terming Advani foreigner
Tribune News Service

Shimla, March 28
Mr Shanta Kumar, former Union Minister, has ridiculed the statement of Mr Kapil Sibbal, Congress spokesperson, terming Mr L.K. Advani, Deputy Prime Minister, as a foreigner and demanded an unqualified apology from him for making such utterances.

In a statement here today, he said he never expected a gentleman like Mr Sibbal could make such illogical remarks. It was obvious that the foreign origin of Ms Sonia Gandhi, which had become a major election issue, was haunting the Congress and its leaders were at a loss to understand how to counter it.

He said the Congress was solely responsible for Partition, which turned lakhs of people like Mr Advani into refugees in their own motherland. Before terming Mr Advani as a foreigner, the Congress should throw out of the country all those who were born in those areas of India which were no longer a part of the country. Mr Advani was born in Karachi, which was very much a part of India at that time.

Further, it was the Congress which shared power with the Muslim League both at the Centre and in many states when Jawahar Lal Nehru formed governments before Independence. The party was still in power with the Muslim League in states like Kerala. The Congress had no qualms in joining hands with communists who sided with the British during the Second World War and opposed the freedom movement, he said.

The Congress had also given positions of honour to rajas and maharajas who committed atrocities on freedom fighters, he said.

Him Lok Tantrik Morcha merges with BJP
Tribune News Service

Shimla, March 28
The Him Lok Tantrik Morcha (HLTM), a regional party floated by Mr Mohinder Singh during the last Assembly poll, merged into the BJP, here today.

The merger was announced at a joint press conference by Mr Suresh Bhardwaj, the state BJP chief, and Mr Mohinder Singh, at which Mr Dile Ram, president of the Mandi district unit of the BJP and other senior leaders were also present.

The morcha had contested 14 seats in the Assembly election and had polled 2.17 per cent votes. Mr Mohinder Singh was the only candidate of the party to enter the Vidhan Sabha. The party has significant presence in Mandi, Solan and Sirmour districts. It had units in seven out of the 12 districts. Mr Mohinder Singh, Who had won from Dharampur seat in 1998 as a Himachal Vikas Congress candidate, was dropped by Mr P.K. Dhumal from his ministry under pressure from a section of the BJP. He later left the HVC and formed the morcha.

Mr Suresh Bhardwaj said the merger of the morcha into the BJP indicated which way the political wind was blowing in the hill state. He said some more leaders would join the BJP soon, when asked specifically whether the estranged partymen like Mr Mohinder Sofat and Mr Narinder Thakur would also be taken back. He said Congress government was misleading the people on the issue of employment and demanded a white paper on the 80,000 jobs, which it claimed to have given so far.

Mr Bhardwaj said the Congress was in a bad shape and was not finding candidates for the Lok Sabha poll, Mr Kaul Singh, the Irrigation and Public Health Minister, had refused to contest from Mandi and the over 100-year old party had failed to find a suitable candidate in its own ranks for the Shimla seat and had fielded Dr D.R. Shandil, who had won the seat as a HVC candidate in 1999. The scenario was bleak for the Congress at the national level as was evident from the fact that Mr Laloo Prasad Yadav gave only four seats out of 49 to the party in the important state of Bihar. There could be no bigger humiliation for the party, which had ruled the country for 45 years. Prominent leaders of the morcha include Mr Dalip Bisht, Ms Vinod Chandel, Mr Dharm Singh Thakur, Mr Joginder Chauhan, Mr Krishna Lal Rana and Mr Balak Ram Joshi.

University students to continue strike

Solan, March 28
The ongoing confrontation between students and the authorities of Dr Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, further deepened after the students refused to accept the five-member probe committee, constituted by the Vice-Chancellor for probing the violent incidents.

The committee headed by the Director, research, Mr K.K. Jindal was constituted yesterday as per academic rules by the varsity authorities for probing the causes which led to violent incidents on the campus on Thursday and Friday.

President of the Central Students Association Manish Thakur, who presided over an emergency meeting of the students, told newsmen here today that the meeting unanimously decided to continue the strike.

He said the meeting demanded from the government to order a high-level independent or judicial probe into the incidents as they strongly felt that the five-member committee of varsity officials was just an eye wash. The meeting felt that the committee would not conduct impartial enquiry which would further aggravate the students unrest on the campus.

He said the students’ current struggle would continue till the acceptance of their demand.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Kumar today held a separate meeting with the students and advised them for ending the agitation. He appealed to them for extending full support in maintaining the peaceful atmosphere on the campus.

The students assured him of their cooperation and demanded withdrawal of criminal cases, registered against their fellow students by the police.

An official of the university said though the situation was tense yet fully under control after the deployment of heavy police force on the campus. — UNI
