PM, Nehru are poles apart, says AICC spokesman
Tribune News Service

Shimla, March 25
Mr Anand Sharma, spokesperson of the All-India Congress Committee, today came down heavily on the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr L.K. Advani, for comparing the Prime Minister with Jawaharlal Nehru and said it was an affront to the first Prime Minister.

Addressing a press conference here today, he said the two leaders were ideologically and politically poles apart. While Pt Nehru was a secular and liberal to the core, Mr Vajpayee, who came from the Sangh Parivar, represented a sectarian, communal and divisive ideology.

By making such a comparison Mr Advani had unsuccessfully tried to raise the stature of Mr Vajpayee in the eyes of public but in the process distorted history and undermined the contribution of Pt Nehru.

The Congress spokesperson hailed Mr Vajpayee as the “master of doublespeak” and things had come to such a pass that no one knew what he actually stood for.

Cong ridicules Advani’s statement
Our Correspondent

Solan, March 25
Terming the comparison drawn by the Deputy Prime Minister Mr L.K. Advani, between Jawaharlal Nehru and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at an election rally on Tuesday as hilarious the AICC spokesman, Mr Anand Sharma, yesterday said that such an analogy belied all facts. Not only was the BJP being carried away by its propaganda but it had started distorting historical facts for electoral gains.

Flaying Mr Advani’s statement he said while Mr Vajpayee did not even participate in India’s freedom struggle, Jawaharlal Nehru had spent 19 years in jail for the purpose. Mr Anand Sharma, who was on his way to Shimla for his March 26 Rajya Sabha poll halted briefly at Barog on Wednesday. He told The Tribune while Mr Nehru was an acknowledged leader of the third world who had vision about future. Mr Vajpayee had his political doctrine from the RSS which has a sectarian and communal approach.

Students stone VC’s residence
Our Correspondent

Solan, March 25
Tension prevailed on the campus of Dr Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry at Nauni near here when an irate mob of students threw stones at the residence of the Vice-Chancellor, Dr S.S. Negi. Peeved at the Vice-Chancellor’s refusal to send more buses to Jubbal for the students to attend the cremation of an M.Sc. student Kuldeep Jesta who was killed in a road accident yesterday, the students started throwing stones. They were requesting the Vice-Chancellor to facilitate their journey by sending some university buses.

The Vice-Chancellor, who had earlier allowed three buses for the purpose, expressed his inability to send more buses on the plea that it would cause inconvenience to other employees who commuted daily from nearby places. The angry mob of students then threw stones on the VC’s ambassador car parked outside his residence and also smashed window panes of his residence. Though the Students Welfare Officer, Mr Chandel, tried to intervene in the matter but the students remained adamant on their demand.

The police, was later called to pacify the situation. The students had, however, calmed down before the police arrived. But resentment prevailed among the students who wanted to attend the cremation of central association’s vice-president.

The Vice-Chancellor was not available for comments.
