Video trials: Tihar inmates need not go to court

The Central Jail (Tihar) premises will now be constantly monitored with the aid of CCTVs, to thwart any more attempts at escape. Also, now the jails would be linked to the courts. The decision to install CCTVs was taken after Sher Singh Rana, the main accused in the murder of Samajwadi Party MP Phoolan Devi, escaped from the prison with the help of a policeman.

70-year-old woman smothered to death
New Delhi, March 25
A seventy-year-old woman was found murdered in her house this morning in Arjun Nagar in the Sarojini Nagar area of South-West district. The house had been ransacked. The victim, Rajrani (70), a retired employee of the Delhi government, was alone at her house when the incident occurred.

Metro’s Rithala section to open without fuss 
New Delhi, March 25
While the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is yet to finalise its decision on a fare hike, it has announced the opening of the Inderlok-Rithala section of the Metro on March 31, but without any fanfare or elaborate inaugural ceremony. The new leg of the Metro will increase the total length of Delhi Metro line in the Capital to 20.974 kms.

Sonepat RWA to file PIL on unscheduled load-shedding
Sonepat:
The Sonepat Residents Welfare Association and the Sonepat Citizens Welfare Forum have decided to file a PIL in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against unscheduled power cuts being enforced by the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) in the city and its suburbs for the past few months.

One killed as jeep rams into tree 
Sonepat, March 25
One persons was killed and seven others were injured when the jeep in which they were travelling rammed into a tree on the roadside near Kathura village, about 50 km from here yesterday. According to a report, all the injured persons were rushed to the PGIMS at Rohtak for treatment, where one of them succumbed to his injuries.

The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of the Delhi Government today claimed to have arrested Constable Naresh Pal of the Delhi Police for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000 from complainant Lakhan Singh for not sealing his factory.

A dreaded criminal, who was carrying an award on his head, had been killed in an encounter by Indira Puram and Kavi Nagar police. He had been involved in a bank dacoity and the murder of a kin of former Minister Hukum Singh.

Pvt schools: Flourishing small-scale industry?
Sonepat, March 25
The thirst for Western style education has led to emergence of a number of teaching shops in the city and elsewhere in the district. These are privately run institutions and hold classes from nursery to the matriculation level. Most of them are small enterprises run by the educated unemployed. These schools constitute perhaps the most flourishing small-scale industry for which one needs no licence, a report says.

Prohibitory orders enforced to check use of unfair means in exams
Sonepat:
The District Magistrate of Sonepat, Mr M. R. Anand, has enforced prohibitory orders under Section 144 Cr.P.C. banning the assembly of five or more persons and carrying of firearms within the radius of 200 metres of the examination centres set up by the Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, for conducting the annual examinations here.

nant Art Gallery is presenting a ceramics exhibition by eight Baroda-based artists from March 27 to April 11. Jyotsna Bhatt, one of the prominent ceramic artists of the country, studied sculpture at MS University, Baroda, and then at Brooklyn Museum Art School in New York. After that she taught ceramics at MS University, Baroda, for 32 years.

A life-saving surgery for morbidly obese people

Endoscopic surgeons at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) have for the first time successfully performed keyhole surgery to remove extra flab in three patients. Kapil was one of the three patients of morbid obesity, who were operated upon at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) recently. Morbid obesity is clinically defined as a condition in which a person’s body mass index (BMI) is more than 40.

A fine knock of 57 n o by Radhey Shyam Gupta and deadly bowling by Nitish Malik (4 for 8) helped Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) defeat Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) by eight wickets in a Super A Division match of the DDCA League at the Mohan Meakins ground.

An all-round display by Dhan Raj Singh (4 for 8, 46 n o, 7x4, 37b) and an unbeaten 71, studded with three sixes and six fours off 55 balls by M P Singh, enabled Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Trust defeat New Zealand High Commission Cricket Club by eight wickets in the third Commonwealth Cricket Tournament for the Raymond Trophy.
