Rainstorm hits city, suburbs hard
Jalandhar, September 15 In many areas, the storm forced people, living in make-shift dwellings, to run for cover. While the storm was characterised by winds at a very high speed, not witnessed in recent times, its force threw life out of gear for the about an hour during which it raged. Even as the storm and the rain after it, brought down the temperature of the city, which had been relatively warm for the past few days, it also caused significant damage in many areas. In the Sodal area, a tree got uprooted and fell on devotees, causing serious injuries to some of them. The injured were admitted to a nearby private hospital. Another tree fell in the Namdev Chowk area, where no damage was reported. In the Bhargo Camp area, the storm also caused the wall of a petrol pump to fall. In some other areas as well, there were reports of weak building walls and portions falling due to the storm. Power outages were also caused across the city due to the storm. In many other areas of the city, trees, signages, poles and neon signs fell. Commuters also faced
a lot of problems during the duration of the storm as traffic came to a standstill while the storm was blowing. In one of the city areas, a mobile tower also
reportedly fell due to the strong winds. |
Newly married man commits suicide
Jalandhar, September 15 Sukhdeep Singh committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance, as his wife Ria was allegedly adamant to continue to work as a dancer at marriage parties and other functions, whereas he was against her performance at public places. Ria and Sukhdeep had fallen in love with each other some time ago and married early this year. However, Sukhdeep was not in favour of her continuing working as a dancer. So he forbade her to perform as dancer after the marriage, but she reportedly did not pay any heed to him. Even Ria’s mother Jyoti and her brother Chetan reportedly supported her to continue as dancer. Sukhdeep’s wife Ria and his in-laws also allegedly started harassing him on one pretext or the other. In her statement to the police, Sukhdeep’s brother Dhanpreet Singh, residing separately in Gurmeet Nagar on the Mithapur road, said, “Following his continuous harassment at the hands of his wife and his in-laws, he committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance.” At this, the city police arrested Ria, her mother Jyoti and brother Chetan for allegedly instigating Sukhdeep to commit suicide after filing a first information report (FIR) under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Bhargo camp police station concerned on his brother's statement. Sukhdeep’s body was sent for autopsy to the local Civil Hospital to ascertain the exact reason behind his death and to know what poisonous substance he had consumed to commit suicide. |

Aero-modelling, flying a passion for this Army officer
Jalandhar, September 15 “I started assembling my own aircraft at the age of seven with the help of bamboo sticks, card boards and wire and used to fly these in the backyard of my house. I also made many static aircraft for display in my own house,” said Singh. During his student life, his love for flying took the backseat and was restricted to computer games only. It was only after he joined the Army that his passion for flying again spread its wings. “I was posted to the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, in Pune in 2006. I joined the group of professional aero-modellers who used to come there for flying. It was only then that I took this sport seriously and also bought some trainee aircraft,” said Singh. Presently, he is flying many sophisticated aircraft like Easystar, Scanner, Piper and Jenny Cortis. But being a serving officer, does he face any problem to continue his passion? “Oh yes! The biggest problem is the transportation of my aircraft on my postings. They are so expensive and delicate that they have to be transported in sophisticated wooden boxes, which requires a full truck space. So, every time, I have to hire an extra He also added that although he had the privilege to fly in open grounds inside the cantonment, most of the time, he has to take permission for sharing the air space, as most of the cantonments have helipads and air strips inside them. Also, he revealed that due to his transferable job, most of the time he has to fly alone. “It is a sport which is enjoyed in a group. “But, by the time a group is formed, I am posted out,” he said. He also revealed that he enjoyed flying even when he went on United Nations mission to Sudan (UNMIS). “I taught aero-modelling to two officers and even gifted them two of my favourite planes,” said Singh. What is the reaction of his better half? “He is a complete aviation nut! But I support his passion. He generally flies on Sundays. So he takes me out every evening on weekdays and earns his flying hours on Sunday in proportion to the time spent with me,” giggled Simran, his wife and an ex flying officer herself. They got married within four days after meeting on the Net. About his future plans, Lt-Col Singh says he is interested to teach aero-modelling provided some body has a lot of time and patience. “This is a very expensive and time-consuming sport. Those who want to learn should have a passion for it. There is no age bar for this sport. Anybody from the age of seven to 70 can learn this game,” said Singh. He feels that the low popularity of this sport is due to the shortage of specified aero-modelling grounds in India. Also, there is no well-defined policy for the import of these aircraft in India. Here is wishing all the luck and good wishes to the newly arrived sole aero modeller in the district for his first aero-modelling competition at Pinjore. |
State on verge of industrial revolution: Dy CM
Jalandhar, September 15 While stating that the policy of the SAD-BJP Government is to bring the industrial revolution in the state, he said the state had already announced the Industrial Policy, which had got an unprecedented response from the industrial honchos in the country. Sukhbir said, "Punjab will soon witness a massive industrial revolution as scores of industrial giants want to set up their units here. A delegation of the Tata group recently visited Punjab to identify new investment avenues. Within months, positive results in the industrial sector would be before the state, which would shut the mouths of those who are misleading people." Launching a scathing attack on PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa, Sukhbir said, "It seems, the PPCC chief do not understand the ABC of economics. Bajwa should be more concerned about the financial mess at the Centre instead of concocting misleading economic details. Punjab is in a good fiscal health as it has only 30 per cent debt ratio to the gross state domestic products (GSDP), which was 46 per cent at the time of the previous Congress regime." Addressing the gathering, the Minister for the Health and Family Welfare, Madan Mohan Mittal, requested the Deputy CM to prove an industrial package to the Punjab industry in order to give a boost to the industrial sector. "I know that the industry is passing through a bad phase because of the wrong policies of the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre and ignoring Punjab as far as the special package for the industry is concerned. But, there are certain issues at the state government level which are required to be addressed. Though, Sukhbir had held meeting with industrialists to sort out their problems in the recent past, I would like to request him to hold another meeting to address the remaining problems," he said. |

Hepatitis B & C are more infectious than HIV, say health experts
Jalandhar, September 15 These were the highlights of a discussion on chronic viral hepatitis organised at the monthly meeting of the All-India Integrated Medical Association (AIIMA) here today. Dr Amit Singhal, DM (gastroenterology and epilepsy) and Dr Sumesh Handa, DM (neurology), were the main speakers. In the first half of the meeting, Dr Amit Singhal discussed chronic viral hepatitis (hepatitis B and C). He revealed that most of the times, hepatitis B was present in the body without any symptom but slowly it damaged the liver of a patient. He pointed out that doctors, nurses and health service providers could get infected as during treatment they are more close to a patient. He advised that screening for hepatitis should be done for all patients, especially indoor patients. "All family members of a patient should be vaccinated, if tested positive. There is no vaccination for hepatitis C, but can be treated, if diagnosed earlier. About 3 per cent of the world population is infected with hepatitis C," the doctor claimed. Dr Sumesh Handa shared his experiences on epilepsy. "The proper initial response to a generalised epileptic seizure is to roll the person on the side (recovery position) to prevent ingestion of fluids into the lungs, which can result in choking and death," he said If a seizure lasts more than 5 minutes or more than one seizure occurs without regaining consciousness, emergency medical services should be contacted. |
