Finally, F&CC meet held
Jalandhar, September 12 Work orders of various developments projects, to be executed at a cost of Rs 25 crore, were released in the much-awaited F&CC meeting, attended by all five members, including Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, Deputy Mayor Arwinder Kaur Oberoi, BJP councillors Ravi Mohindru and Bhagwant Rai Parabhakar. However, some of the proposed projects were cancelled by the F&CC committee due to some discrepancies. While the committee cancelled the project of sapling plants at a cost of Rs 18 lakh in different parts of the city due to the paucity of funds, as several societies were already providing the same free of cost to residents for planting them. The construction of a road from Bhagat Singh Chowk to Railway Road, at an estimated of Rs 32 lakh, was also cancelled, the sources said. This project was cancelled, as its cost was shown to be exorbitant by the officials concerned for which they were also grilled. Secondly, this project was also included in some other agenda, the sources added. |

Jalandhar, September 12 As many as 861 diarrhoea cases have been reported in the district as per the statistics available with the health department (from August 26 to September 1) and the number of gastro cases pouring in from the outbreak-hit area alone, during this period is 442 (OPD) and 57 indoor cases (including those being reported at private hospitals). The total district cases have been reported from the about 500 reporting centres in the district. But these do not include the cases reported this week. As far as cholera is concerned, since the outbreak until today, about 594 cholera cases have been reported from Garha. The number of dengue cases reported in the city so far have been eight, including a fresh case, which was reported today. While one person died of jaundice yesterday, barring this, three more jaundice cases (water borne) have also been reported in the city so far. Epidemiologist Dr Satish Sood said the analysis of various areas revealed a substantial decrease in the cases and today only two cases were reported. On the future course of action, Civil Surgeon Dr RL Bassan said, “The threat of the outbreak is almost over and we shall be considering today as the last day of the emergency camp. However, routine camps and checks will go on as usual in Garha as well as other city areas.” Meanwhile, even as the committee constituted by the DC (including SDM-1 Iqbal Singh Sandhu, XEN Punjab Pollution Control Board and XEN Public Health) did not submit its report based on the findings regarding the Garha outbreak today, sources say the report assigns the major blame for the outbreak and the contamination in the area on to the migrant colonies in which insanitary conditions prevail. SDM I Iqbal Singh Sandhu said the report would be submitted to the DC tomorrow. While cases have been reported from a number of areas like Garha, Basti Bawa Khel, Shiv Nagar, Gandhi Camp, Bhargo Camp, Basti Peerdaad, Swaraj Nagar, Basti Sheikh and Basti Danishmandan others have also poured in from Dairy Complex, Sant Nagar, Avatar Nagar, among others. So far, singular attention hasn’t been paid to any other area barring Garha. Moreover, health sources are already saying the outbreak, being relatively controlled for the past few days, is almost over. |
Aadhaar camp shut at SAD leader’s ‘behest’
Jalandhar, September 12 Actually, both Oberoi and Pappu are political rivals as their wives, Rani Sharma and Arwinder Kaur Oberoi (Deputy Mayor), contested elections against each other from ward number 29 during the last municipal corporation (MC) elections. Pappu said, “The camp for registration for getting Aadhaar cards was set up at Vaishno Mandir at Saida Gate falling under ward 29. The camp evoked a huge response from the general public, as a number of persons gathered there for registering themselves for Aadhaar card.” The Congress leader alleged, “My rival Kuldip Singh Oberoi was upset at the huge response from the public at the camp set up on my initiation. At this, he called up district officials and got the camp closed at 12 noon, within two hours of its setting up. The employees working at the camp got call from their seniors, who asked them to close the camp with immediate effect.”Pappu said the public present there was agitated over closing the Aadhar camp which was set up here for the convenience of the general public. At this, the public started a dharna against the SAD-BJP government for getting closed the Aadhaar camp just because it was set up at the initiation of Congress leader. Local Congress leader Rajinder Beri, who unsuccessfully contested the last Assembly elections from the Jalandhar (Central) segment, also joined the dharna. Later talking to The Tribune, Beri said he would meet the DFSC on Friday to restore the Aadhaar camp for the convenience of the general public. “If it is not restored, I will take up the matter with union ministry concerned for that,” he added. While district food and supplies comptroller (DFSC) could not be contacted despite repeated attempts, Akali leader Kuldip Singh Oberoi said, “I neither initiated setting up this Aadhaar camp nor made any effort to get it closed.” To further queries, Oberoi said, “The administration probably closed it as there were reports that some persons had been charging Rs 100 from each of the persons getting registered for Aadhaar card.” Oberoi said, “I have already got six Aadhaar camps at various places of the ward from time to time for the convenience of the general public.” On the other hand, denying the allegations of charging even a single paisa from any person, Pappu said, “The administration is working at the behest of Akali leaders which will not be tolerated at all. Oberoi was upset to see the huge rush at the camp. That is why he used his influence to get it closed immediately.” |
