UT machinery in top gear for PM’s visit

With a day left for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to the city for the inauguration of a flats complex at Dhanas, the final touches are being given to the sprucing up of the roads and the venue of the function. The staff of the Engineering Department were busy repairing the road from the PGI to Dhanas. The incomplete road between the PGI and the Mullanpur T-point was being constructed this morning.

A student of Class VI was killed and at least 12 other students of Delhi Public School, Pinjore, were injured seriously when the school minibus they were travelling on overturned on the Mallah road this morning.

Khanna’s family rules out foul play

Now, digital token system to save power consumers’ time
Panchkula, September 12

SDM inspects villages, registers 18 FIRs

Eighteen FIRs were registered today in connection with illegal mining after a team headed by an SDM inspected various villages in Kharar sub-division.

Polio drops to be administered in Mohali from Sept 15

More than 1.36 lakh children in the age group of 0 to five years will be administered polio drops in Mohali district during a three-day campaign starting on September 15.

Former councillor files petition, challenges delimitation of wards 
Mohali, September 12
Former municipal councillor Kuljit Singh Bedi today filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the notification of the Department of Local Government on the delimitation of wards for the Mohali civic body elections. Bedi claimed that when the Municipal Council was dissolved, the government had said that the area under the civic body would be increased by including various areas like the developed sectors of the town before conducting elections to the Municipal Corporation.

Admn reassures aggrieved parties

To avoid any unsavoury situation during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit, the UT Administration is taking all the precautions like reassuring those whose issues are yet to be resolved. One such case is the notification of the Chandigarh social welfare board, which has been pending for the past 10 months.

Now, online appointment a must
Chandigarh, September 12
Now, for the re-issuance of passports, applicants will have to take online appointment from the regional passport authority. The decision has been taken to streamline the submission of passport applications at the Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) in Ambala, Chandigarh and Ludhiana. These kendras are under the Regional Passport Office, Chandigarh.

Trains to Shirdi, Hazur Sahib via Chandigarh from next month 
Chandigarh, September 12
By next month the city will be connected with Shirdi and Hazur Sahib by train as the Railway Ministry has given the green signal to it. These trains will run from the first week of October. In a communication to the local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal, Union Minister for Railways Mallikarjun Kharge informed that the two trains connecting Chandigarh with these religious places will run from the first week of the next month. The final date of the journey is yet to be communicated to the Northern Railways. The two trains include the Kalka-Chandigarh-Shirdi Express (weekly) and the Una-Nangal Dam-Anadpur Sahib-Chandigarh-Hazur Sahib (Nanded) Express (bi-weekly), which were announced by the former Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal in the 2013 Rail Budget .

Fire breaks out at Swaraj Mazda unit

A fire broke out in the Swaraj Mazda unit in Chappar Chiri here today. According to the reports, the local fire brigade received a call from the factory at around 9.30 am and a fire engine was immediately sent to the scene.

Man survives 3 heart attacks

A 55-year-old Ambala resident Mohan Lal Verma escaped three heart attacks and managed to survive after an open heart surgery by the doctors of the Alchemist Hospital, Sector 21, Panchkula.

NGO to teach needy students
Chandigarh, September 12
Students of private schools and colleges associated with a city-based NGO, Saathi, will soon teach the underprivileged students to improve their academic performance. The project has been envisaged by the NGO for the underprivileged students of government schools, especially of Classes VIII, having the potential to perform but lacking resources and guidance. “The idea is to raise their competency level so that they could perform in IIT and IIM competitions,” said Punita Singh, president of the NGO.

Residents protest against meat plant

Residents of Samgouli and other adjoining villages staged a dharna and blocked the traffic on the Samgouli-Dera Bassi road on Wednesday against the Mk Overseas Slaughter House for causing pollution in the area by throwing wastage of animals on the roads.

Name Lalru CHC after freedom fighter: Residents

The Community Health Centre, Lalru, named after the great freedom fighter Baba Prithvi Singh Azad, started in 1995 as a rural hospital, has not got recognised after the name of the freedom fighter till now. Though, it was adopted by the Punjab Health System Corporation in July this year but it was not reognised as ‘Baba Prithvi Singh Azad Memorial Hospital’ despite the repeated demand by local people. The people of the area have been continually demanding the upgradation of the hospital and its recognition on the name of Baba Prithvi Singh Azad who belonged to Lalru and paid great contribution in the freedom struggle.

Railway GM, official penalised for not refunding Rs 320
Chandigarh, September 12
The General Manager of Northern Railway has been penalised for failing to refund Rs 320 to the complainant who had booked a ticket and later got it cancelled. The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has also penalised the Chief Reservation Supervisor, Chandigarh, and directed both the respondents to pay Rs 2,500 for mental agony to the complainant.

Man gets 7 years for abducting minor
Chandigarh, September 12
A local court today awarded seven-year imprisonment to a 26-year-old man for raping a minor girl. The convict, Shatrughan had abducted a 14-year-old girl of Maloya village in February 2012.

Two SBI managers held guilty of embezzlement
Chandigarh, September 12
The local CBI court held former State Bank of India Chief Manager Ajit Singh and Deputy Manager JP Ranga guilty of embezzling nearly Rs 40 lakh in an 11-year-old case today. The court has found them guilty under sections 120-B, 420 and 409 of the IPC and 13(2) and 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on Monday.

Mohali beat Ludhiana 
Chandigarh, September 12
The cricket team of Mohali defeated Ludhiana by 88 runs during a match of the ongoing Katoch Shield Cricket Trophy, today. The Ludhiana team scored 119 runs in 70 overs. Mohali with this outright win secured 6 points, while Ludhiana got Zero. Ludhiana's innings was sustained by Bharat Malhotra's 33 runs .

DAV College thrash CCET

On the first day of Panjab University Inter-College Basketball Championship for men (A-division), the team of DAV College, Sector 10, defeated Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology (CCET), Chandigarh, 66-16 today. In the second match, the team of Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11, beat MMD DAV College, Gidderbaha, 55-12.
