Miscreants open fire in Football Chowk
Jalandhar, September 14 Nearly half a dozen youths came from each side on their bikes, fired five to seven rounds of fire and left the entire road splattered with glass. Luckily, none was injured during the assault
and the gangsters left the spot soon in about five-seven minutes. The place where the incident took place has a hotel, a bank, a gym, a nursing home and falls on Bhagwan Mahavir Marg connecting Jalandhar with Kapurthala and
Amritsar. The Jalandhar’s sports market falls right across the roundabout and so do the posh Adarsh
Nagar, Basti Adda Chowk and other localities. Police force reached the spot in force. Commissioner Ram Singh, ADCP-1 Naresh Dogra and ACP Dalbir Singh reached the spot. The police has reportedly managed to identify those involved in the clash from a CCTV footage recorded in a
nearby shop. ADCP Dogra said the gangsters were being identified and would be
arrested before morning. He said that they would all be booked under Section 307 of the
IPC. Similar incident On Thursday, two girls strolling outside their house in Kamal Vihar were attacked by a group of youths. The miscreants left the girls badly injured. They are recuperating in a hospital. The main accused in the case, Gurpreet Singh, alias Lover, of the same colony had attempted suicide and is reportedly serious and admitted to another hospital

Four-year-old girl rescued, sent to Nari Niketan
Jalndhar, September 14 Following allegations of the girl being maltreated by her present guardians yesterday, the police had visited her home and asked her to issue a statement to the police regarding handing over her custody to the police. Asa Rani and her relative Gurpreet, accompanied by their neighbour Gagan (whose mother Vanita had complained to the police yesterday), today visited the police station No. 8. ASI Mangat Ram, from police station No.8, while talking to The Tribune, said, “The woman and her relative came to the police station today. While they already seemed incapable of handling the child amidst allegations that they maltretated her, Asa Rani herself also admitted to us today that she was no more able to take care of the child. We have taken her statement to this effect and the little girl’s custody has been passed on to the 1098 Childline.” The ASI added that barring this development, no charges had been pressed against Asa Rani. Notably, Gagan had also informed the 1098 Childline about the girl yesterday. Volunteers of the 1098 Childline took the girl into their custody and after a hearing with the District Child Welfare Committee (CWC), temporary shelter has been provided to the girl at the local Nari Niketan. The coordinator of 1098 Childline, while talking to The Tribune, said, “While temporary shelter is being provided to her at the Nari Niketan for now, arrangements for her stay might be changed after the next meeting of the CWC.” |
Punjabis have greatly enriched Hindi: Prof Bedi
Jalandhar, September 14 Prof Bedi revealed that when the discussion was going on in Parliament to decide the National Language between Hindi and English, Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India, asked everybody to raise their hands in favour of Hindi or English. Out of the 500 present, 250 raised their hands in favour of Hindi and the rest 250 in favour of English. It was only when Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir, ex-Chief Minister of Punjab, raised his hand as the 251st vote that Hindi was declared the official language of India. “Hindi is a very important binding language among 24 languages spoken in our country. Most of these languages are derived from Sanskrit, which is a rather difficult language to understand. So people all across the country feel comfortable to connect through Hindi,” he added. Discussing the contribution of Hindi towards Punjabi literature, he said many Punjabi poets in the 10th century like Chand Bardai from Lahore had contributed a lot for the Punjabi literature. He also said that out of the 36 poets whose verses were included in Guru Granth Sahib, 30 were Hindi poets. “Both the Punjabi and Hindi languages are like sisters, sharing their inheritance with each other,” said Prof Bedi. He also said that the famous aarti “Om Jai Jagdish Hare” had been written by a Punjabi poet, Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri. “He also wrote the first novel in Hindi ‘Bhagyawaali' in 1886. In fact, 70 per cent of the Hindi fiction had been written by Punjabi poets only,” said Bedi. Talking about the role of Hindi in the modern era, he revealed that after realising the importance of the Hindi language across the world, SAARC countries are now planning to declare it as their official language, as all countries, including Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh etc, understand Hindi.September 14 is celebrated as Hindi Diwas to mark the importance of the Hindi language. It was in 1949 that the Constituent Assembly decided to acknowledge Hindi as the official language, and in 1950, the Constitution of India adopted Hindi in the Devanagri script as the official language of the Union. |
College lacks sports infrastructure
Jalandhar, September 14 Recently, the college football team breathed its last due to the shortage of playground and experienced coaches. Presently, out of the 11 teams, only hockey team left to exist in the college. But that too is on its last leg as the college failed to provide even a playground to them inside its spacious campus. There is one playground but the college authorities have still not cleared the bushes and the building material of the under-construction office blocks are also scatterd everywhere inside the play ground. Due to this the hockey team is shuttling every day between various turfs available in the city. “Earlier, we were practising in the Burlton Park after getting a special permission from the Deputy Commissioner. Now, sometimes we practise on the nearby turf in the Hockey Academy of Punjab and Sindh Bank. Thrice a week, we practise on the turf of Punjab Armed Police Grounds. But then, in the absence of a ground, lot of precious time is getting wasted in travelling from one place to another,” accepted Sangeeta Sareen, HOD, Sports Department, Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women. While the college boasts of having facilities of hockey, football, kabaddi, volleyball, lawn tennis, table tennis, judo and wrestling on its website, none of the team except hockey presently exists in the college. The judo team also got scattered due to the shortage of judo mats and a professional coach. “We cannot provide sports facility to each and every student according to her choice. Also, what is the point in spending crores to upgrade the sports infrastructure when there is nobody to teach its use to our players? We don’t even have a professional hockey coach with us. One of our teachers is giving coaching to our hockey team in the absence of a professional coach,” said Kuldeep Kaur Dhaliwal, Principal, Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women, Jalandhar. However, she revealed that now they are applying for a UGC grant to upgrade their sports infrastructure. She also shared her dream to construct an indoor sports complex inside the college. The matter of the fact is that sports department is one of the most expensive department for an educational institution. Everything in it has to be provided free of cost. Even the players are taken as burdens by some private colleges as they have to be provided free accommodations, food and kits by the college. Developing more infrastructures means inviting more players and hence more burden on the institution. Many private colleges and institutions are thus avoiding to upgrade their sports facilities which is causing many sporting talent to lose their way in between. |
Punjab Youth Congress to start 30-day padyatra
Jalandhar, September 14 Stating this, PYC president Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary accompanied by its general-secretary Sukhwinder Singh Danny said, “The padyatra will start from Jalianwala Bagh in Amritsar on Gandhi Jayanti on October two and will culminate at Jalandhar on late PM Indira Gandhi’s death anniversary on October 31.” “The PYC will cover all the 13 parliamentary segments and 60 out of total 117 assembly segments of the state during 30-day padyatra by covering 35 km a day to spread awareness about significance of various pro-public schemes including Food Security Act initiated by Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and against anti-people policies of Parkash Singh Badal-led SAD-BJP government.” He added. Vikramjit said a public meeting would also be held at Jalandhar at the time of culmination of padyatra here on October 31 where various senior party leaders including Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi would be invited to address the gathering. To a query, Vikramjit said he had already filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High-Court for praying it to give direction to the Punjab government to remove photos of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal from each of the 240 ambulances run in the state under 108 national ambulance scheme (NAS). He said “Carrying Badal’s photo on each of 240 ambulances run in the state is a glaring example of the Punjab government making attempts of taking credit of various pro-public schemes started by Dr Manmohan Singh-led UPA Government. But we will not allow Badal government to succeed in its motives of taking credit of centrally-sponsored schemes and we spread awareness regarding all these programmes during our padyatra.” |
Stop implicating snatchers under NDPS Act: Cong
Kapurthala, September 14 Local Congress MLA Rana Gurjit Singh said “Punjab Police has already booked several hundred youths under NDPS Act under such policy to keep chain snatchers inside jail for some months. Such policy will harm the state as these youths will become hard core criminals in future. So this policy should be discontinued immediately.” Addressing Congress activists during dharna outside Sadar police station, Rana said “If Punjab government is of the view that current laws are not so stringent for snatchers, it should work in the direction to make it more harsh instead of adopting illegal ways of booking them under NDPS Act.” Stating that it generally took over a year for getting report regarding drugs from forensic laboratories regarding “recovered” drugs, Rana demanded that drug detection and identification field test kits should be made available in each district for detecting different types of drugs so that justice should not be unduly delayed in case of those accused booked under NDPS Act. Alleging that several false cases under NSPS Act have been registered by Sadar SHO Sukha Singh, Rana further stated "A number of Congress workers have been implicated under NDPS Act just to settle political scores by police at the behest of ruling Akali leaders.” Talking about revelations made by former DGP prisons Shashi Kant regarding politics-drug smugglers nexus in the state, Congress MLA said he should also make the names involved in such nexus public for the welfare of the masses. General public faced a lot of inconvenience due to dharna as traffic remained jam on Sultanpur Lodhi road for several hours. No person wrongly booked under NDPS Act
Policy of booking chain snatchers under the NDPS Act does not exist as not even a single person has been wrongly booked under this law. How can we do that? Actually 90 per cent of chain snatchers are drug addicts. When we catch them, drugs are invariably found from their possession. Regarding allegations of implicating some persons under the NDPS Act against Sadar SHO, I cannot do anything on the basis of vague allegations. I have not got any written complaint. If I get any complaint regarding a particular case, I will get it inquired by a senior official~ — Inderbir Singh, SSP, Kapurthala |
