After one year, the BJP-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has reclaimed its hold over the much-hyped Delhi University Students' Union top panel with three of its candidates for president, vice-president and joint secretary posts recording a sweeping victory with huge margins, leaving its arch rival Congress party's students wing National Students' Union of India (NSUI) with the post of secretary.

The DUSU polls mandate, whose results were declared at Police Line's Community Centre today amid high police presence, is significant indicating the mood of the city's youth.

Election of the new panel of DUSU, whose majority posts have been dominated by the ABVP in the past, has also left All India Students' Association (AISA) rejoicing as its candidates stood at the third positions in three posts while the group saw a jump by over 250 pc in this year's polls.

Among the presidential candidates, ABVP's Aman Awana, an MA first year student of Buddhist Studies, polled 17,879 votes, way ahead of NSUI's Vishal Choudhary of Rajdhani College who secured 16,346 votes followed by Aqueel Ahmad of Zakir Hussain College with 1,114 votes and Hindu College's MA English literature student Anjali, fielded by radical Left student group AISA.

A BA Sanskrit Hons student of PGDAV College Utkarsh Choudhry was elected as the vice-president with 1,4968 votes.

Secretarial candidate Karishma Thakur of NSUI, which held the top three positions last year, bagged the seat with 1,4662 votes as compared to 11,944 votes of its competitor Anshu Lakra of ABVP and it was again AISA whose Charul Negi of Deshbandhu College finished third with 5702 votes.

For joint-secretary's post which witnessed a tie last year (NSUI and ABVP), ABVP's Raju Rawat stood first at 15,643 votes followed by NSUI's Kushank Khari at 12,355 votes and AISA remained third with its candidate Mohd Khan Siddiqui of Sri Venkateswara College polling 6,621 votes.

BJP divided over CM candidature

New Delhi, September 14
Though the BJP today announced that it would begin its election campaign on September 17, the birthday of party's prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, it had not yet decided who would be its chief ministerial candidate in Delhi. It is clear that the differences among the senior leaders persisted.

This issue was recently discussed in the central BJP that had reportedly received complaints about the functioning of the Delhi BJP chief, Vijay Goel. State senior party leaders did not favour Goel's name for the CM’s post.

A few weeks ago, the name of former Health and Education Minister Dr Harshvardhan figured for CM's position. But the news was later denied by the state election in charge, Nitin Gadkari, who reportedly directed the state leaders to work in coordination.

The party now holds joint press conferences and has given a slogan - "Win Delhi, win India". However, the senior leaders just attend the conferences and do not stay in the party office, giving the message that the differences among them have persisted.
