56% turnout in JNU; 43% cast vote in DU
New Delhi, September 13 Nonetheless the Left-ruled JNU scored better than DU where a total of 50 colleges and departments went to polls with the polling percentage recorded at the former being around 56 per cent as compared to DUSU's nearly 43.62 per cent. Though, DU despite all incident of violence and vandalism in run up to polls saw a jump of over 3 per cent in polling from last year's 40.5 per cent and an increase in voters turnout, with the total votes polled being 51,285 from a total voters strength of 1,17,546 as confirmed by Chief Electoral Officer, DU, Dr Ashok Vohra while JNU saw a dip this year vis-à-vis its prevous year's poling. The polling started at JNU around 9.30 am and went on till 6 pm with students thronging to cast their ballot at the four designated polling stations at School of Social Sciences, School of Languages, Environmental Science Department and School of International Studies amidst sounds of drums and chanting of slogans by supporters of various students' groups. JNU chairperson of electoral committee Gyan Prakash Gupta said, "The polling happened without any hassle, though the percentage registered was less than last year. This could be as students from nearby places went on holiday over the weekend. We will begin the counting late night and the results are expected on September 15 or next day." This time the number of groups participating in polls at JNU has gone up with SFI's break away faction now known as DSF and students concerned being new entrants apart from the CPI (M) supported SFI, Left AISA, CPI's AISF, BJP-backed ABVP and Congress' NSUI. Unlike JNU, where voting took place through ballot papers and with police personnel stationed outside the campus, DU had 50 polling centres with each college having two-three polling booths where students recorded their choices through 900 EVMs amidst heavy police presence on and around the colleges. |
BJP demands fast track courts in every district
New Delhi, September 13
This aspect of delivering justice to victims of gender crime must be addressed earnestly. All loose ends need to be tightened on priority basis so that a repeat of December 16 like incidents could be checked. The demand of fast track court has been made following the verdict in the Nirbhaya gangrape case that had happened in December last year and within a year final judgement has been pronounced. Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said, "This verdict will hopefully instil the fear of law among perpetrators of crimes against women." From Jessica Lal case to Nirbhaya case, the outpouring of public anger ultimately led to speedy investigations and disposal of such cases. However, even after so much of public glare, it took more than eight months to dispose of this case. One can imagine what would be happening in thousands of other cases. "On this occasion all the stakeholders need to take stock of the status of women safety in Delhi. The bitter fact is that despite so many announcements after the December 16 case by the Delhi Government, women feel even more unsafe today." To make Delhi a safer city, responsibility must be fixed and officials be held accountable for rising crime in the city in general and crime against women in particular. The Chief Minister should not say that security is Centre's responsibility. Delhi requires better policing and stricter enforcement of rule of law. "Focus must also be given to proper rehabilitation of rape victims in Delhi as they face discrimination at societal level. They must be provided with an environment that helps in dealing with the psychological impact of such incidents and leading a normal life," he said. The Nirbhaya case exposed the very functioning of the government machinery right from issuing licence for public transport buses to patrolling by the police and keeping strict vigil in the city. Still in many areas of the city, basic concerns of security are not addressed. These issues range from streetlights even on and under the flyovers to the regular patrolling and movement of the PCR vans. |
Dikshit hails court judgement

Only 5 per cent of the population of Delhi has seen the economic growth and the rest 95 per cent population is reeling under high price rise. He said that the Government of Delhi claims that the Delhi ranked second as per the GDP during the past five years but the facts also state that Delhi ranked 18th during the financial year 2005-06. Prof. Malhotra said that by showing the statistical jugglery of the figures on the number of unemployed in Delhi, the government is claiming of development. However, during the past 10 years, the government provided employment to only 11,242 and 10,16,338 people got themselves registered with the Employment Bureau during this period. Whereas there were 91,585 vacancies in various departments, he added. The report put a question mark in the quality of the drinking water and water-borne diseases, he said. "It does not mention about the scarcity of electricity and water and increase in the tariff by two to 15 folds. This report does not mention about the condition of more than 90 per cent of people living in unauthorised colonies, JJ colonies, and urban villages,” he said. |
