Travelling children’s litfest commences in
Doon
Dehradun, September 24 Mimi Basu, an academic and editor from Puffin India who worked with the Oxford University Press earlier and Nimmy Chacko, a writer and editor who had a stint with Amar Chitra Katha and is now with Penguin India, conducted sessions for children in the 11-14 years age group at Jaswant Modern School based on “The A-Z alphabetic tour of India” and “The Wildlife Wisdom Quiz”. “The aim of the sessions was to carry forward the affinity of children to Panchatantra and ignite in them a quest for more knowledge about their country and wildlife so that they grow up to become protectors of their environment. I saw an incredible India brought alive in the classroom,” said Mimi Basu. The book on wildlife is aimed for middle school students and has been brought out in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The WWF would launch a national quiz based on the book next month across schools in India. This was a special precursor to the national quiz organised for the festival by Puffin India. Later in the day, a session on creative writing and making the class more interesting was conducted for teachers. The festival reached out to about 200 children and teachers on the first day. Nimmy Chacko said, “I enjoyed the session with the students. They are enthusiastic to learn more about the environment. The festival is doing a fantastic job of igniting reading habits among children. This is the second time I have come for the festival. I feel the festival has travelled well on its mission.” Rachna Gahilote, president of Nivesh and organiser for the festival, said, “It’s been an incredible journey of five years for this festival. It was the dream of Thakur Vishva Narain Singh, the inspiration for this festival, to see children with books and have their own libraries. We have managed, in our little way, to make this come true by taking the festival, books and writers to places where there was no access to the same. It is heartening to hear, year after year, stories of how reading has gone up amongst the children we visited as part of the festival.” Tomorrow, sessions will be conducted for those in the 15-17 years age group. There will be addresses from Shaguna Gahilote, Prempal Sharma, Manas Ranjan Mahapatra and noted Australian author Christopher Cheng.

‘Vernacular children’s literature extremely rich’
Dehradun, September 24 Chacko, who was in Dehradun today to attend Ghummakkad Narain, a travelling children’s literature festival, asserted that vernacular literature in the country was very rich when it came to writings for children. She pointed out that translations held the key in disseminating this literature for children from one part of the country to another. “Works are already in progress to translate children’s literature in Bengali. Similar efforts are already on for translating literature for children in Malayalam into English and Hindi,” said Chacko. She said through translations of children vernacular literature, which is otherwise restricted to a particular region, children from other parts of the country will also be benefitted. Nimmy, a former Amar Chitra Katha writer, said comics held much attraction for children. “Comics can never go out of fashion as pictures draw children’s attention more than text does,” she said, adding that not only in India but also in the west, comics play an important role in furthering the cause of children’s literature. Appreciating Ghummakkad Narain, the travelling children’s literature festival, for its efforts in espousing the cause of children’s literature, Nimmy said the festival was doing yeoman’s service to the cause of children’s literature, which was otherwise neglected in the country.aShe said the festival deserved plaudits for criss-crossing several parts of the country for the past six years. It has even focused on the North East this time by holding events in Shillong, she said. She hoped that the festival would even venture abroad in days to come. |

Dehradun, September 24 The seminar comes in the backdrop of accusations being levelled against the governor for trying to appear Sanskrit and cow friendly to please the BJP government that appears to be hellbent upon his removal. Rubbishing such claims, Dr Qureshi said that the Sanskrit symposium was envisaged a year back when the BJP government was not even in power. “ It is my humble contribution to the language that should have become the language of the masses. He also conveyed his disappointment at having failed to elicit a favourable response from the Uttarakhand government for allocation of funds for the
Haridwar-based Uttarakhand Sanskrit University. “It is my desire to see the university expand and gain an international status but despite writing to the government several times, we have failed to get the funds,” added
Qureshi. Similar sentiments were also echoed by the Vice Chancellor of the Uttarakhand Sanskrit University Professor Mahavir

Haridwar,
September 24 Chairperson of the Uttarakhand Identified Statehood Agitators Committee Dhirendra Pratap has demanded a CBI inquiry into the issue so that truth in the allegations made against the Kedarnath MLA comes out. Dhriendra
Pratap told The Tribune during a brief halt at the Damkoti state guest
house here today that he had always been in favour of clean, honest,
transparent and ethic-based politics. “As the allegations made against
the party legislator are quite serious, it is better to opt for a
high-level probe so that no one doubts the working the Congress-led
coalition government,” he added. “Our government is committed to
transparent and legal governance. Hence, I will meet Chief Minister
Harish Rawat to recommend a CBI probe so that our legislator comes out
clean in the matter. Allegations levelled against Shaila Rani are
serious and rival political parties are trying to take political mileage
out of the controversy. Hence, it is in the interest of the Congress and
the legislator that a CBI probe is conducted to bring truth out,” said
Dhirendra Pratap, who also served earlier a ranked minister in the
Narayan Dutt Tiwari-led state government. On the Gairsain capital issue, Pratap said the Congress had paved the way for it to be the capital of the hill state as already state Assembly building at Bharidasain is being made, with Congress opening its party office at Gairsain. “The
hill state should have a hill capital as is in Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim
or Nagaland. For decades people of this Himalayan belt fought for a
separate state with state capital in Gairsain, which is at the midst of
both Garhwal and Kumaon divisions of Uttarakhand. We are working in the
right direction to make Gairsain the capital of the state,” said
Pratap, who is also Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson. On Ganga
cleaning issue, Pratap, who wanted Lok Sabha ticket from Pauri Garhwal,
said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government’s reply to apex
court that it will take 18 years for Ganga cleaning is quite contrary to
the claims the BJP leaders made during the election campaign and Finance
Minister Arun Jaitley made during the annual Budget. |

‘Centre failed to help hoteliers’
Mussoorie, September 24 The president of Uttarakhand Hotel Association Sandeep Sahni alleged that no financial assistance was given to the business community, including hoteliers, after the disaster that brought acute financial crisis on the business community resulting in a suicide. Sahni said the hotelier from Guptkashi, Om Prakash, who committed suicide had clearly mentioned in his suicide note that the main reason of his death was not receiving any financial assistance despite losing his hotel in the disaster. He further said that the banks had postponed loan and interest for one year after disaster but presently were charging compound interest for the same, that was unfortunate. He also informed the media persons that a letter in this regard had been written to the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley they had not received any positive response so far. However, local BJP leaders termed it as a political stunt and an attempt to hide the failures of the state government being run by Congress Party of which Sandeep Sahni is also one of the respected members. The BJP leaders were of the view that if Sandeep Sahni was so much concerned about the “indifferent attitude” of the Central Government then it should have been the Congress government that was in power during the disaster as the onus of providing financial relief fell on the government running the state. The BJP leaders dared Sahni to seek a white paper on the amount of financial relief that was sent to the state following the disaster if he was so much concerned about the disaster-affected people of the state. Sahni said the hotel associations would be celebrating World Tourism Day on September 27 by presenting flowers and serving cold drinks to the tourists at the entry gate near Kohlukhet. |
