Centre orders probe into illegal quarrying
Haridwar, September 13 Swami Shivanand, founder of the Matra Sadan Ashram, yesterday said the Nainital High Court on May 26, 2011, had ordered that owing to environment reasons, stone crushers, schools, colleges and hospitals should not be allowed near the Ganga. The high court had directed the Haridwar district administration to ensure violators were brought to book. Swami Shivanand said despite the high court directive, the Haridwar administration failed to initiate any action and hundreds of stone crushers continued operations in the prohibited areas. The Union Environment Ministry took cognisance of a letter written by him and ordered a probe into illegal quarrying going on unabated on the Ganga riverbed, he added. The Swami said the Union Environment Ministry had directed its regional office in Lucknow to submit a detailed report in 15 days. Also, saints of the Matra Sadan ashram should be apprised of the development. Matra Sadan inmates had earlier provided a detailed report to the Environment Ministry on irregularities and large scale illegal quarrying going on in Haridwar district. Swami Dayanand said representatives of Matra Sadan would accompany the team to be headed by the Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Lucknow, during the investigation.
