Two more political parties are born in state
Kanda launches HLP in Gurgaon
Naveen S Garewal
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, May 2
Gopal Kanda, a former Haryana Minister of State for Home and sitting Independent MLA from Sirsa, launched the Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) here today. He said it would break away from the traditional political role and would target the youth for support.

Though no senior politician from any other political party joined Kanda at the launch of the HLP, Kanda spelt out the agenda in the form of an election manifesto for the impending Vidhan Sabha elections.

Kanda reportedly made efforts to involve former Union Minister Venod Sharma, who resigned as an MLA today, who failed to turn up at Kanda's rally thereby delaying the HLP launch.

“I could have instrumented the fall of the Hooda Government but then we would have been accused of engineering it. The government would collapse in a few months after the General Election and the HLP would take over reins”, he said to a thunderous applause while projecting himself as the future Chief Minister of Haryana.

While promising a series of initiatives “when voted to power”, Kanda said that opposition parties were in a state of panic and would try enter into a conspiracy to prevent the HLP from forming the government. He hinted that there were moves to get his bail cancelled to send him back to jail so that the HLP would not threaten the existing political parties. He, however, announced that soon a “massive rally” would be held where the party would announce its future course.

Kanda, who was expected to address his supporters at his defunct MDLR Airlines’ office here at 11 am was three hours behind schedule. But thousands of workers from all over the state sat patiently. A massive langar was arranged to cater to 10,000 supporters. As the blue saree clad women, procured from an event management company in Delhi, doled out membership forms for the HLP and welcomed all potential members, Kanda made a series of announcements from the stage. “From making hawai chapals, I have flown hawai jahaz (airplanes), I know how to get money for all the announcements”

Kanda said: “I promise to rise above caste politics or regional biases and will only work for humanity”.

He promised to bring the Haryana Police on parity or even ahead of the Punjab Police in terms of salary, build a sports city in Haryana, set up an industrial zone between Sirsa and Hisar, abolish factory raj, make Haryana toll-free, hold elections in colleges, announce a separate Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandak Committee (SGPC) for Haryana, raise old age pension to Rs 5,000 per couple (Rs 2500 each), and fight for Haryana’s share of water from Punjab.

Film personalities Satish Kaushik and Anil Sharma who came to support the HLP were promised a film city in the state. He also promised to set up embroidery and stitching centres for women and computer centers for youth in every village.

Lashing out at the INLD and the Congress, he asked the people to reject the “feudal” and “dynastic” rule in the state and support the party that would work for them.

May face disqualification

Chandigarh: Former minister and Independent MLA Gopal Kanda could face disqualification from the House. Sources in the Vidhan Sabha said his action could invite disqualification from the House since he had been elected as an Independent. Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Sharma said, "We will examine the matter once it is brought to my notice."

"It is immaterial if I continue as a member of the House or not. This is all they can do to save face and keep themselves busy till the elections. It does not bother me," Kanda said.

Former IG floats Rashtriya Lok Swaraj Party
Nitish Sharma
Tribune News Service

Kurukshetra, May 2
Former Haryana IGP Ranbir Sharma today launched the Rashtriya Lok Swaraj Party which would contest all 90 seats in the coming State Assembly elections. The party would give 50 per cent tickets to women contestants.

Ranbir said: “We don’t want to give all power to one man known as the party supremo. It would be a party with a difference and democracy is our prime agenda. There will be no post of president in the party. All decisions in the party would be made by the working committee through secret voting.”

Ranbir Sharma took voluntary retirement (VRS) as Inspector-General of Police, joined the Aam Aadmi Party earlier this year but left it within three months, alleging that there was a huge difference between what AAP said and did.

The party is the political avtar of a social organisation (Lok Swaraj Jagran Manch). About transforming a social organisation into a political party, Sharma said: “We have been executing many social works under the banner of the Lok Swaraj Jagran Manch and we would continue to execute our social responsibilities. We are now a political party also which will fight for democracy.”

Sharma contested the recent Lok Sabha elections as an Independent candidate from Kurukshetra.

About getting into any alliance or supporting any other political party, Sharma said: “There is no inter-party democracy in other political parties. Hence, we will contest all seats alone. The party will soon approach the Election Commission of India for registration.”

Venod Sharma resigns as MLA
Geetanjali Gayatri
Tribune News Service

Venod SharmaChandigarh, May 2
Former Congress leader Venod Sharma, who quit the party in March this year, resigned from the Vidhan Sabha today. Sources said he met Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Sharma in Delhi and presented his one-line resignation as MLA. Sharma is learnt to have accepted it with immediate effect.

With his resignation, the Ambala City seat has fallen vacant and strength of the House has been reduced from 90 to 87.

The number of Congress MLAs is down to 44. Sohna MLA Dharambir had quit the Congress to contest the Lok Sahba elections on the BJP ticket.

Despite this, the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government faces no immediate threat in the House. The Congress government has the support of six Independents and the lone Bahujan Samaj Party MLA. Independent MLA Gopal Kanda withdrew support from the government earlier this week, ahead of floating his own outfit, the Haryana Lokhit Party.

Confirming that he had resigned from the House, Sharma said he had decided to do so since he had been elected to the House on the Congress ticket.

"I quit the party in March and saw no reason to continue as an MLA since I didn't represent the Congress," he said.

The former MLA is also likely to float his own party ahead of the Assembly elections in October to encash on the non-Jat sentiment in Haryana.

Also, sources close to Sharma said he felt his constituency was being given step-motherly treatment after he parted ways with the Congress and even on-going development works had been stalled on flimsy grounds.

Kanda spits fire on Hooda government
Sumedha Sharma
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, May 2
The MDLR office, which has been defunct for several months, was abuzz with activity today. The otherwise deserted area had undergone a makeover as the launchpad for former minister Gopal Kanda's new party.

Though all eyes were set on the gate for the arrival of some MLAs or estranged Congressmen, especially Venod Sharma, nobody turned up.

While Kanda was supposed to address the gathering at 11 am, he was late by almost three hours.

His supporters, however, braved the scorching sun and waited for him. Announcing the launch of the new party, Kanda spit fire on the Hooda government, accusing it of tapping phones of all its ministers and MLAs. “I will not divulge any names. Please ask Hooda for this clarification,” Kanda said.

About the Geetika Sharma suicide case, Kanda retorted: “I have no criminal charge. It was a conspiracy. Please speak to the judge concerned for the details.”

Mum on women's security

Former minister Gopal Kanda, the key accused in the Geetika Sharma suicide case, remained silent on women’s security at the launch of his party today.

Kanda, who launched the Haryana Lokhit Party amid fanfare today, made promises ranging from getting a film city to saving cows, but did not utter a word on the security to women in the state. “I have seven pronged policy for women, children and farmers. I will give them benefits that nobody has ever given. Everything cannot be said in a single go," he said.

The issue has given Kanda opponents a chance to mar his party.

“Does he have a face to talk about women security when he himself has been accused of harassing one?” said a local Congress leader.

Kanda has been insisting on being framed for Geetika Sharma’s suicide.

Meanwhile, social activists led by Sumer Singh Tanwar burnt Kanda's effigy, saying it was the darkest day in the history of the state politics to have allowed Kanda to launch a party even as Geetika Sharma was yet to get justice.

HC for Rs 5,000 as monthly aid to acid attack victims
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 2
Taking up the burning issue of acid attacks, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the Haryana Government to take a positive decision on providing a monthly financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to the victims.

The direction is significant as the state had earlier filed an affidavit, rejecting this demand by petitioner HC Arora. As the case came up for resumed hearing this morning, Arora protested that the committee of administrative secretaries, headed by the Chief Secretary, Haryana, at a meeting on March 21 accepted the proposal. But the competent authority, or the Chief Minister, rejected the recommendation.

At this stage, the Bench observed that problems faced by acid attack victims could not be solved by one-time compensation, as their problems continue for a long period. The HC further observed that Arora's suggestion for a monthly financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to each acid attack victim "deserves acceptance." The Bench, therefore, asked the Haryana Government to re-consider its decision on this issue.

The High Court also directed Punjab and the Chandigarh Administration to replicate the Haryana policy on facilities and compensation to the acid attack victims. For the purpose, it gave Punjab and the UT Administration time till August 8.

The High Court also clarified that the updated policies for grant of benefits to the victims would apply to sufferers not yet cured. Haryana had earlier accepted the suggestion for allotment of fair price shops to acid attack victims. It had, in fact, filed an affidavit by Chief Secretary PK Chaudhary, claiming that the Haryana Government's policy now included a clause that "victims of acid attack would be given preference for allotment of shops."

Already, the High Court has made it clear that it intends to put on the fast track acid attack cases pending in the courts. The court has even directed the Punjab Government to expedite monetary compensation and ensure adequate treatment for acid attack victims of Moga.

The case hovers around the acid attack on Mandeep Kaur and father Shamsher Singh on July 11last year. They were on their way to the Moga District Courts to attend the hearing of a case when the attack took place.

Merchant, son robbed, beaten up
Tribune News Service

Fatehabad, May 2
A wholesale pharmaceutical dealer from Fatehabad, who was returning home with his son after dropping his wife at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, was waylaid by armed miscreants near Meham in Rohtak and robbed of their car, cash and belongings.

The trader, Prem Sagar Mehta, and his son Deepak Mehta, returned home after an ordeal that lasted more than two hours during which they were beaten up several times. They were also asked to get Rs 10 lakh as ransom and were taken to several unknown places.

“We were near Meham at about 2.45 am, when a car stopped ahead of us near a narrow bridge. A youth came out of the car and inquired about the way to Jhajjar. As my son, who was driving the car, opened the window glass, the youth took away the car’s keys. Deepak protested and came out to seek help after he noticed another vehicle coming from behind. However, that vehicle too belonged to the gang,” said Mehta, narrating the nightmare.

“In no time, four youths entered our car. One of them took control of the wheel and started moving towards a link road. The other two vehicles disappeared. We were taken to some fields after travelling along a canal for some time, where they threw away our mobile phones and started beating us with sugar canes that they uprooted from the field. They wanted me to arrange for Rs 10 lakh as ransom,” he added.

When Mehta expressed his helplessness to arrange the money, the miscreants drove them in their car from one place to the other for nearly two hours, pressurising him to arrange money or be prepared for death.

“We do not know of the places we were taken to, but we saw milestones of Bawani Khera and Hansi on two different occasions,” he said.

Finally, the youths let them off near Jamalpur village in Hisar after finding Mehta’s condition worsening.

While leaving them, the miscreant gave them Rs 1,000, out of the nearly Rs 26,000 Mehta had with him then, and also gave him a bottle of mineral water.

The miscreants also took away his new Maruti Ritz car with them. Mehta and Deepak remained in the fields for over an hour and then hired a taxi with the help of a villager and reached home.

Meanwhile, on Rohtak SP Rajesh Duggal’s orders, the SHO of Meham police station Narender Singh went to Fatehabad to record statements of Mehta and his son.

While Nisha has been arrested by the government railway police (GRP) for abetting suicide of her husband Narender (26) of Agwanpur village, her paramours Satish and Mona of the same village are still evading arrest.

According to Ram Phal, GRP chowki in-charge at Gannaur, the GRP recovered the body of the deceased from the railway track near Gannaur on April 27.

Narender's brother Surender lodged a complaint stating that the former was a labourer and had married Nisha about five years back. Narender used to suspect that she had illicit relations with Satish and Monu.

On the evening of April 26, Narender saw Nisha in an objectionable position with them. When he opposed this, he was allegedly beaten up by the three. Upset over this humiliation, Narender left the village and committed suicide.

On his complaint, GRP registered a case against all the three accused and arrested Nisha yesterday. During preliminary investigation, she confessed to her involvement in the crime. She was produced in the court today which sent her in judicial custody.

Villagers block road against power shortage for 6 hours
Tribune News Service

Jhajjar, May 2
Residents of Noona Majra and Lova villages in the district blocked the Jhajjar-Bahadurgarh road for over six hours against power shortage. The protesters also locked the main gate of the 132 KV power station at Noona Majra village which led to power shutdown in nearly 10 nearby villages.

The protesters lifted the blockade following assurances by power officials that the power supply would be improved soon.

The protesters also threatened to block the road again if the assurances were not fulfilled soon. “Our daily routine has been badly disrupted due to shortage of power which is being supplied merely for 6 to 8 hours in this scorching heat for over a month. We have so many times urged the power officials to restore normal power supply but to no avail,” said a protester.

“We have been struggling to arrange potable water as the power shortage has also disrupted the supply of drinking water in the village,” said a woman protester, alleging that the authorities were deliberately not paying any heed towards their troubles.

The villagers blocked the road in the morning by sitting there.

Bahadurgarh DSP Sumit Kumar along with other administrative officials rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the villagers assuring that the issue would be resolved after discussing it with power officials.

But the protesters did not relent stating that they would not clear the road until a written promise for restoration of adequate supply of power was not made.

On the other hand, commuters had to face a tough time as their vehicles got stuck in serpentine queues. The long queues were seen on both sides of the road. Many commuters had to choose various approach roads to reach their destination. The protesters lifted the blockade after higher officials of the power department and district authorities reached the spot and assured them of ample supply of power soon.

Parveen Arora
Tribune News Service

Karnal, May 2
The Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) today demanded a bonus of Rs 500 per quintal on wheat from the state government for farmers, who are facing natural calamity due to bad weather and are incurring losses due to less wheat production. It has also threatened to launch a massive agitation from May 16 against the government.

Sewa Singh Arya, state party president, pointed out that the rates of crops had not increased much after the Independence while the rates of other agriculture inputs had been increased.

Strongly advocating the Rs 500 bonus per quintal of wheat, Arya said, “The MSP of wheat should be maintained at par with the price index as the production rate of wheat is increasing regularly. Due to hike in the cost of diesel and labour prices, the cost of production is increasing,” he said.

"We are requesting the government to immediately sanction bonus to partially compensate farmers for the loss,” he demanded.

He said the government had launched a policy named the Rashtriya Krishi Beema Yojna, which is not fit for farmers. “A farmer would be compensated only when the entire area is affected,” he rued.
