Chaos at school : Students told to leave entrance exam midway
New Delhi, May 2 They were taken by surprise when teachers told them about the age criterion that students who were below 13 years or more than 15 years as on March 31, 2014, are not eligible. Feigning ignorance, complainants claimed that the school authorities did not bother to intimate them previously about the same on the day of form fill up and even issued registration slips and admit cards to the applicants. "The school administration told that my child is underage and he would not be able to write the exam. What kind of joke is this after the registrations are over and admit cards being given? Why were not we informed about such a criterion? This is for the first time that the Delhi government has brought out an entrance for Class IX and now it is taking away the right from our children for admission," rued Ganesh Bodiyal, a child rights related NGO employee whose child too was refused at the exam centre. The Directorate of Education (DoE) of Government of Delhi-NCT has introduced the one-hour entrance exams for Classes IX, X and XII to give a chance for admission to low-cost government schools to students who have migrated from other states or those who wish to switch from high-end private schools. A circular in this regard was issued on April 24 followed by subsequent registrations even as parents had been enquiring about it for over a month now. "The applications we receive for admission is quite high each year whereas the seats are too less. Also, there are students in unaided private schools who are not able to discontinue due to high fees. So, this is the first time we are holding entrance exam for admission to Classes IX, X and XII. The criteria have been put up on our website and schools too have been sent circulars. “The system is not centralised. There may be another exam as admissions will continue till July," a senior DoE official at B-Block, West Zone, told The Tribune. Another parent, Prabhu Dayal Sharma from Mohan Garden area said, "We had been making rounds of schools earlier and we were told that it would happen in July but then the circular was released and today our children were refused on the basis of date of birth. Almost 30 per cent children were refused a chance here. This should have been checked earlier." After transfer of her husband, Nupur Goyal who collected her son's transfer certificate from previous school in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, was too one among the parents. Many students cried upset scared of losing a year. "We requested but they did not allow us to complete the paper and also took away the registration slip. I do not want to waste one year," said Hitesh and Aman Kumar of Dwarka who will be 13 years old in October. |
IGL hikes CNG prices by Rs 2.95 in Delhi
New Delhi, May 2 This revision in prices would result in an increase of Rs 2.95 per kg in the consumer price of CNG in Delhi and Rs 3.35 per kg in the consumer price of CNG in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad. The new consumer price of Rs 38.15 per kg in Delhi and Rs 43.50 per kg in
Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad. The new consumer price of PNG to the households in Delhi is also being revised from Rs 24.50 per unit to Rs 25.50 per unit up to consumption of 36 units in two months. Beyond consumption of 36 units in two months, the applicable rate in Delhi would be Rs 48 per unit. Due to differential tax structure in Uttar Pradesh, the applicable price of domestic PNG to households in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad would be Rs 27.30 per unit up to consumption of 36 units in two months, which has been increased from existing Rs 26.20 per unit. Beyond consumption of 36 units in two months, the rate applicable in these cities would be Rs 48.75 per unit. Explaining the reasons leading to the revision in the price of CNG, the official spokesperson for the IGL said, "We are constrained to revise the retail price of CNG and PNG mainly due to increase in the overall input cost of natural gas being sourced by us. Since there has been no change in the domestic gas allocation to the IGL and is expected to remain at existing level in the near future as well, the increase in gas consumption is being met through higher priced imported R-LNG," In addition, there has also been an increase in the operating expenses which include increase in minimum wages announced by the government as well as increase in power tariff. However, this increase would not have a major impact on the per km running cost of vehicles. |
No power tariff hike till July
New Delhi, May 2 The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has directed the discoms to continue with the existing rates that are between 6 and 8 per cent. The DERC will also take a final call about the annual tariff revision in July. "We have allowed 6 per cent of power-purchase cost adjustment surcharge to discom BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), 7 per cent to Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) and 8 per cent to the BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) which are the existing rates. "This was the same for the last quarter too,"
said PD Sudhakar, chairman of DERC. Recently, discoms had asked for a 14 and 15
per cent increase in the surcharge. This comes as a relief to the power consumers of the national Capital who are experiencing a tough time with increased electricity bills after the subsidy offered by the previous AAP government to all those consuming up to 400 units got over. Till July, Sudhakar said that there will be no increase in the power tariffs. "We also have to keep in mind the consumer's interest. If there is any balance amount it can be considered during the annual exercise," Sudhakar said.
