30-yr-old records destroyed in office fire
Chandigarh, May 2
Firefighters at the gutted office of the Directorate of Institutional Finance and Banking, Punjab, in Chandigarh on Friday. A major fire broke out at the office of the Directorate of Institutional Finance and Banking, Punjab, in Sector 17 early this morning. Thirty-year-old records and office paraphernalia were destroyed in the fire. However, some files that were kept in almirahs were saved.

Punjab directorate gives fire safety a miss

The fire safety mechanism, which is required at all the commercial buildings, was missing at the office of the Directorate of Institutional Finance and Banking. The office didn’t even have fire extinguishers.

Just about a week after Worldhotel Turquoise was sealed, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today rapped the hotel owners before asking them to remove violations till Monday. The High Court also warned them against carry out commercial activity until the UT Estate Office gave its clearance.

The UT Estate Office staff today razed the illegal construction of Hotel Jalandhar in Sector 18. Recently after the directions of the UT DC, the Estate Office had sealed the hotel for violations in its building. It had constructed eight rooms as against the six sanctioned on the first and second floors. At the same site the construction plan for the second floor did not conform to the one that was sanctioned.

A CBI court in Panchkula today awarded three years imprisonment to a civilian working with the Army in a bribery case. A fine of Rs 25,000 has also been imposed on the accused.

Youth found hanging from tree at Sec 31
Chandigarh, May 2
The body of a 25-year-old man was found hanging from a tree in the jungle area near Ram Darbar in Sector 31 this morning. A passerby had noticed the body hanging from a tree at around 9.30 am and informed the police control room. The police lowered the body and shifted it to the mortuary of the GMCH-32.

Man duped of Rs 5 lakh
Chandigarh, May 2
A city resident has been duped of Rs 5 lakh on the pretext of winning a lottery. The victim, Kamal Kumar Verma of Mauli Complex, alleged that Ram Singh and others lured and cheated him. He said Ram Singh assured him that he would make him win the first prize of a lottery, which was around Rs 50 lakh. To win the lottery, he was asked to deposit around Rs 5 lakh in two different private bank accounts, which he did.

Woman’s purse snatched

In a snatching case registered today, Raj Rani of Nehru Colony, Sector 52, told the police that a person riding a Pulsar motorcycle sped away after snatching her bag containing Rs 1,000 in cash on Thursday. Raj Rani was crossing a road in Sector 22 when her purse was snatched. Later, the accused, Nizamudin, a resident of Dhanas, was arrested.
