Major fire at two industrial units in dera bassi Tribune News Service
Dera Bassi, May 2 Fire broke out at a godown of Nachiketa Paper Limited, a paper board manufacturing unit located in Mubarikpur on the Dera Bassi-Ramgarh Road, at about 9.45 pm last night. Waste paper and other goods, stored in the godown, were reduced to ashes, the witnesses revealed. Receiving information, the Dera Bassi fire brigade rushed two fire tenders along with a team of firemen to extinguish the flames. After a struggle of almost nine hours, the fire men could control the blaze. Mandeep Singh, fire officer, claimed to have received the information at about 10.40 pm and subsequently the fire engines were rushed to the spot. After extinguishing the flames, the firemen retuned at about 6.20 am, he claimed. The functional fire hydrants at the industrial units proved of great helped for the fire brigade, he claimed. The industry owner, who is also the president of the Dera Bassi Industries Association, Vijay Mittal claimed that hundred tons of waste paper worth lakhs of rupees was reduced to ashes. In another similar incident, fire broke out in Unit -II of Nectar Lifesciences Limited, a pharmaceutical company that manufactures generic products, located in Haripur Hinduan village on the Dera Bassi-Barwla Road, this afternoon. The fire reportedly spread to the OH section of the unit and destroyed raw and finished drugs. Besides plant and machinery, the fire also caused damage to the building, claimed HP Singh, vice-president of the company. The exact loss caused to the industrial units was not ascertained as yet. |
Man gets 3-yr jail in bribery case
Panchkula, May 2 In a joint operation by the CBI and the military intelligence on May 3, 2008, the accused, AK Sondhi, who was working as a superintendent in the Army’s ordnance branch, was caught red-handed while taking bribe of Rs 1 lakh at his residence in Sector 4 here. The complainant, Sunil Kumar, had alleged that though Sondhi had demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to get 10 labourers employed, the deal was struck for Rs 1 lakh. The accused was held guilty on April 28. His wife was also working with the Western Command. — TNS |

Graft case: Ex-SMO gets 2-year jail term
Mohali, May 2 The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Jaswinder Sheemar here sentenced Dr Gian Singh in a case registered by the Vigilance Bureau (VB) in 2011. The VB had arrested the doctor while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000. As per the VB, Dr Singh was working as the SMO at the Government Hospital, Zira, when he was arrested. He had allegedly taken bribe in connection with a case relating to a person, who was attacked in a land dispute case. Gurdev Singh, a resident of Dyal Rajputtan village in Tarn Taran, had complained to the VB that the SMO had allegedly sought Rs 15,000 in connection with the treatment of his friend, Gurbhinder Singh, who was injured in the attack. — OC |

Youth found hanging from tree at Sec 31
Chandigarh, May 2 The deceased, Radhika Prasad, was identified on the basis of the voter ID card recovered from his pocket. The voter ID mentioned his address to be in Gonda in Uttar Pradesh. The police said the picture on the voter ID card was not clear and they were confirming the details on the document from the authorities in UP. Sector 31 police station SHO Inspector Kirpal Singh said the man appeared to be a labourer, who allegedly ended his life. Thieves decamp with cash, jewellery
Panchkula, May 2 Cash amounting to Rs 20,000 and Rs 2,500 has been stolen. Jewellery has also been stolen. However, the officials were unable to tell the exact cost of the same. Families of both the officials were not at home when the incident took place. It was only after their return that they found the lock broken. A case of theft has been registered at the Chandimandir police station. |

Woman’s purse snatched
Chandigarh, May 2 In a separate incident, Rajat Mehra of Sector 20, reported that someone had stolen his Activa Honda scooter (CH-03S-3925), from near SD College, Sector 32. In another incident, Vinod Kumar of Sector 20 reported that someone has stolen his LCD, jewellery and Rs 20,000 cash from his residence. The police have registered separate cases of thefts in all incidents and efforts were on nab the accused. 14-yr-old boy honoured The police honoured a 14-year-old boy who helped the police in catching a snatcher by noting down his vehicle registration number. The purse of Lakhwinder Kaur, wife of a constable, was snatched in Sector 20-A, on April 29. The accused riding a motorcycle (CH-01AB-6153) snatched her bag containing a mobile phone and cash. Anmol, a resident of Sector 20, noted down the registration number of the vehicle and informed the police about the incident. The police arrested the accused Aashish (20)in the case. Recognising the efforts of Anmol, the SHO, Sector 19, gave his name to senior officers for recommendation. The IGP, RP Upadhyaya, rewarded him with a cash prize of Rs 5,000 and a certificate. The reward was given to him today. |

Teenager killed in road mishap
Panchkula, May 2 The victims, identified as Neeraj, Sourav, Sandeep and Shanky were rushed to the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula. While Neeraj was declared brought dead, Sourav and Sandeep were referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. The car driver, Hitesh, had also sustained injuries in the collision and was admitted to the hospital. Chandigarh, May 2 Mohali were bundled out for 156 in their first essay. Forced to follow on, Mohali were bundled out for 133 in 48 overs in the second inning. Nirmal Singh (54) and skipper Shubman Gill (62) shared an opening stand of 102 runs while no other teammate managed to touch a double-figured score. Jairaj wins junior north zone golf tourney
Chandigarh, May 2 Around 69 young golfers between the age group of 13-17 years had competed in the five-day tournament. Jairaj Singh Sandhu won with the score of 284 while Shubham Narain and Yuvraj Sandhu bagged second and third place with the score of 293 and 294, respectively. Earlier this month, Shubhan Narain had won Jaipur tournament while Firoze Grewal won Gurgaon tournament defeating Prakhar Asawa in the play-off. The final tournament will be played in Bangalore in November later this year. |
