500 jhuggis gutted, thousands left homeless
New Delhi, April 25 Eight persons injured in the fire were given medical treatment. The Delhi Fire Service sent 40 fire tenders to the slum. Hundreds of other jhuggis in a nearby area were safe because a high wall separated them from the burning slum. While the victims claimed that the fire started at around 7:30 am and alleged that the fire tenders arrived only after much was burnt, the fire department said it received a call at 8:30 am and succeeded in dousing the flames by about 10:40 am. While the authorities are yet to ascertain the cause of the fire, the victims claimed that it began when a woman was cooking on a gas stove in one of the huts. The fire spread to the other huts, causing the explosions in several cylinders. "Due to the blasts, we had to run to save our lives rather than attempt to douse the flames," said Alam Sheikh, a victim. Like Sheikh, other men living at the slum, work as scrap dealers. The women do odd jobs, including working as maids at posh colonies in Vasant Kunj. Officials claimed that most of the residents of the slum were out of their houses at work, which helped in reducing the number of injured people and preventing casualties. Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung visited the slum at Masoodpur in the Vasant Kunj area in the morning and inspected the relief and rescue operations. He gave directions to the Deputy Commissioner and other officials present at the site to provide an immediate relief to the people. He also directed that ex gratia payment be made to those affected and they be rehabilitated at the earliest. The Deputy Commissioner informed the LG that 15 ambulances were rushed to the slum. The eight injured persons have been admitted to different hospitals. "The LG directed the Deputy Commissioner to set up medical camps at the site and provide immediate medical attention," said a senior Delhi government official. Jung also directed the officials to arrange for adequate drinking water and food packets for the victims. "The Deputy Commissioner assured the Lieutenant Governor that water tankers from the Delhi Jal Board and food packets were being arranged and they would be setting up temporary night shelters to accommodate those affected. By the afternoon, 10 water tankers, an MCD health team and a team of doctors from Fortis were present at the site," explained the official. Two more incidents of fire were also reported though there was no casualty. Fire broke out in a dry-cleaning shop in central Delhi's Bengali Market in the wee hours today. The blaze spread to nine neighbouring shops in which goods worth lakhs were gutted. According to Delhi Fire Services, the blaze started at around 4 am and was extinguished by around 6 am with the help of 15 fire tenders. Another blaze was reported at the canteen of Safdarjung Hospital at 2 pm and four fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames. |
Missing boy found murdered
New Delhi, April 25 The investigations have revealed that Vasu was probably murdered at about 12 am today and his body dumped on the Gokalpuri road. The killer had suffocated the boy by covering his nose and mouth. The police suspect that the culprit might have used his hands to kill the boy as there are visible injury marks on his nose and lips. "At about 7 pm on Thursday, Vasu's family had complained to the police that he went missing. We tried searching for the boy, but could not find him and this morning, a passerby on the Gokalpuri road informed us about the body lying there," said a police officer, privy to the details of the case. The police have not identified the suspects in the case. On the other hand, Vasu's uncle, Jai Mittal, alleged that Vasu's family with their neighbours had reached the New Usmanpur Police Station in northeast Delhi at about 7 pm on Thursday, but the police didn't cooperate. "At 5 pm on Thursday, Vasu went to play and did not return home in Brahmpuri. We searched for him for more than an hour. Our neighbours helped us. When we couldn't find him, we went to the police station where we filed a missing complaint and the police assured us that they would start searching for him. We continued our search after we left the police station and at around 1.30 am, we again went to the police station to plead with them. There were four policemen, out of which only one was sent to find Vasu," alleged Jai. The police, however, denied the allegations and said that they had been searching for Vasu since the complaint was registered. The police informed Vasu's family about his body, which was sent for a postmortem. He was later cremated. |
