Eatery owner stabbed to death over Rs 250 bill
New Delhi, April 15 The three accused, all vegetable vendors at the local vegetable market were arrested on Tuesday morning. They are reportedly regular visitors to the dhaba. They belong to western Uttar Pradesh. They arrived at Yusuf's (25) eatery about 10.15 pm and ordered a meat dish and chapattis. "Later they ordered two more chapattis. The bill came to about Rs 250 which included the cost of the two extra chapattis. The accused started fighting with the shopkeeper claiming that they were being overcharged," said a police officer. An argument started between Yusuf and the accused. It turned into a brawl. Rashid allegedly stabbed Yusuf in his stomach with a knife. Saheb and Akram then allegedly attacked Yusuf with the skewers. Yusuf's 30-year-old brother, Nawab, tried to save him, but he was also attacked with skewers. The other shopkeepers at the market immediately informed the police about the incident. While the three accused managed to escape before the police's arrival, Yusuf and Nawab were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre. Yusuf was declared dead there while his brother's condition is critical. The police are waiting for Nawab to recover to record his statement. Meanwhile, the accused had fled the site of the incident and returned to the market this morning. They were apprehended by the police. They were staying at a rented accommodation in a nearby area. The three youths have been booked for murder. |
Two gangsters held for double murder
New Delhi, April 15 According to the police, the two accused are allegedly "sharpshooters" of the Neeraj Bawana gang. A reward of Rs 1 lakh was declared on them. With their arrests, the police claim to have solved two extortion cases. On February 28, a Skoda car driven by Rahul had an accident with a tempo driven by Sahab Singh. "Rahul with Katya and Ravi indulged in a brawl with Kaptan Singh and his brother Sahab Singh. They shot the two brothers dead," said Ravindra Yadav, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime). The police was tipped off today that Rahul and Ravi will head towards Pooth Khurd village in a white Swift car about 5 am for allegedly murdering Rajesh, who is a member of the Neetu Dabodha gang. "Rahul and Ravi arrived in the Swift car in the village. The police directed them to surrender, but they opened fire at them. The police quickly apprehended them," said Yadav. With the arrest of the accused, the police claimed to have solved two more cases of demand of protection money. |

BJP demands uninterrupted power, water supply
New Delhi, April 15 He said that according to the forecast of the Meteorological Department, there will be sudden increase in the temperature after April 20. At present, the temperature is below normal due to western disturbance. But the power distribution companies are resorting to undeclared loadshedding even these days. Power loadshedding is being done in the name of maintenance work which should have been completed two months ago. The maximum demand of power in Delhi is 3,600 mw only. But this demand may go up to 6,200 mw in June. The BJP leader said that power distribution companies are not in a position to supply 6,200 mw power. The LG should issue directions to them that they should make power purchase agreement for May and June so that the people may not face the shortage of power. Exams are going on in Delhi University and other colleges these days. But due to power cuts, the students are suffering. Dr. Vardhan said that after the start of summer season, serious shortage of drinking water is being faced in various areas of the capital like Uttam Nagar, Dwarka, Sangam Vihar, Kirari, Nangloi, Bawana, Tuglakabad, Badarpur, Seelampur, Karawal Nagar, etc. Last year a woman had to lose her life for a bucket of water. There are many areas of Delhi where the people depend on the tankers to get the supply of water. |
Sealing of DUSU office: ABVP activists seek VC resignation
New Delhi, April 15 This protest was held at the Arts Faculty, North Campus. Raising slogans like "DU VC Sharm Karo!", "Hitlershahi nahi chalegi!", "Chhatrahiton ka hanan hua to khoon bahega sadkon par!", the students later took out a rally in the North Campus. The students accused the university administration of malafide intention against the ABVP activists and conspiring against DUSU joint secretary Raju Rawat to rusticate him. Students have demanded that Rawat be reinstated immediately. Condemning the university's handling of the situation, ABVP's national secretary Rohit Chahal called it a direct attack on campus democracy and democratic institutions. "This reminds of the Emergency days when students' unions across the country were attacked. Contrary to its stature and assumed neutrality, the DU administration took shameful steps in a revengeful mood after the incident on April 7. In the garb of this incident, the DU administration immediately sealed the office of DUSU, which has been at the forefront to oppose the Four Years' Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) and to make it a national issue," he stated. ABVP's Delhi state secretary Saket Bahuguna said that the DU administration has accepted its mistake of sealing DUSU office and has reopened it this morning, but the administration should unconditionally apologize to the DU student community for attacking the campus democracy and for obstructing the work of a democratically elected union. "The administration is constantly acting as an agent of the Congress and by its partial and unjustified actions against the DUSU representatives belonging to our organisation ABVP it has proved it once more. By forcefully and undemocratically implementing the semester system first and then the FYUP, the VC has only served the Congress policies which aim to destabilise DU," he said. |
Sexual violence a problem for tourism in India: German Ambassador
New Delhi, April 15 "Sexual violence in India is one of the first questions asked in regard to tourism in India. This casts a shadow over the situation. But since the "Nirbhaya case" happened, there have been far reaching debates, which show that India takes the issue seriously. This debate makes society stronger and helps build the image of women abroad. India should be proud because in other countries there has never been such an open debate,'' Steiner added. The ambassador also said that women tourists in India need to follow "practical rules" to be safe. "But on top of that there needs to be more efforts in India to overcome the image which is tarnished. With the public debate, we can say that awareness is there. We have awareness of the public and the police. I think if India continues with this awareness and tourists follow the ground rules, India continues to be an attractive tourist destination," he explained. Steiner recalled a two-month-long trip of a former German Chancellor's 22-year-old daughter to India as a "good experience" for her. The girl started her trip in early February. "She was thrilled about the trip and said that people are friendly. She was happy. I will propagate this to potential tourists in Germany," he said. On the other hand, while promoting Germany as a world-class travel destination, Steiner said there will be 16 visa application centres for Germany across India. "Those who want to apply for a visa do not have to arrive at the German Embassy. They can go directly to the visa application centre. This will save time and money, because of less travel," he said. The visa application centres will be operated in 16 cities in India. Some of these include Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, Goa and Kolkata. "The earlier procedure of getting a visa through the five German consulates, now there are the 16 visa application centres," said Romit Theophilus, director sales and marketing of German National Tourist Office which was part of the press conference. Theophilus said that there were more than 6,15,000 Indian travellers of overnight journeys to Germany in 2013. This is more than a 5 per cent growth in Indian visitors to Germany as compared to 2012. "Our statistics of overnight journeys are only on those people staying at the hotels in Germany. But this is an indicative trend of where we stand," he said. |
Two women robbed in separate incidents
New Delhi, April 15 The victim has been identified as Rati Goyal. Her husband owns a factory. She said the accused fled with Rs 6 lakh from her house at Sector 17, Rohini. The police have found it strange that the robbers left behind a country-made pistol. The accused had used the pistol during the robbery. She said about 4.30 pm two men with an empty bottle approached her and asked for water. Investigators said that her two children were also in the house when the incident took place. She said she went inside the house to get water. The men followed her inside and demanded cash and valuables. They then allegedly started ransacking the house and got hold of a briefcase that contained Rs 6 lakh. The police said her husband had made a business transaction of Rs 7 lakh. He had taken Rs one lakh and had kept the remaining money with her. After the incident, the woman told her husband about the incident who then informed the police. The police have found some loopholes in her version of events. "When we asked her to describe the robbers, she said that they were masked. But if they were masked, then why did she accept their request for water," said a police officer. In the second incident, a 57-year-old government employee of the Coal Ministry was allegedly attacked and robbed by two motorcycle-borne men outside a Metro station in Northwest Delhi this evening. The police said that the victim, Rita Bansal, was returning to her house at Sector 11, Rohini, when she was accosted by two men on a black motorcycle around 6 pm. She said that when she walked out of the Metro station the two men on the motorcycle came near her and tried snatching her bag. |
Gramin Sewa autos barred inside city in public interest: Govt
New Delhi, April 15 The state Transport Department, however, said, so far, the decision has not been implemented and hence, the plea of auto-rickshaw owners was "premature" and be dismissed. "The resolution restricting Gramin Sewa operation beyond Outer Ring Road was taken after due discussion in the State Transport Authority Board meeting in the larger interest of public and road safety," the affidavit, filed by Yogesh Pratap, Deputy Secretary of STA, said. The submissions were made in the affidavit filed before a bench of Justice Manmohan which had earlier sought a response from the department on the plea of Gramin Sewa Vehicle Owner Welfare Association seeking quashing of the decision to bar 'Gramin Sewa' auto-rickshaws from plying inside city areas. The Route Rationalisation Committee of STA had on August 12, taken a decision on the routes of Gramin Sewa auto-rickshaws and decided that they will be allowed to operate only in those areas which fall outside the Outer Ring Road in the national Capital. The association, in its plea, had said "issue a writ of certiorari seeking quashing of impugned public notification by respondents terminating the Gramin Sewa routes..." It said the decision to allow the autos to ply only outside the Outer Ring Road will deny them the right to earn the livelihood and hence be quashed. The Delhi government had on June 17, 2010, allowed such autos to ply for five years on various routes, especially in rural areas where there is either poor or no service offered by Delhi Transport Corporation.
