Delhi Police booths in every Metro station
New Delhi, April 14 According to police officials, the Delhi Police recently approached the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) recommending police booths be set up at 49 stations. The recommendation has been accepted and the DMRC is ready to set up designated booths for the police. "The presence of a police booth at Metro stations will work as a deterrent. It will help check crime inside the Metro and its premises," said M.K. Meena, joint commissioner of police. "Though we have recommended 49 locations, the idea is to cover every Metro station," Meena said. The 129 stations host around 25 lakh commuters in the capital each day. At the moment, there are eight Metro police stations with a total strength of 209 police personnel. According to the official, the stations which see a ridership of more than 25,000 per day, or are on the borders of Delhi, have been given priority. A few stations which come under this category are Kashmere Gate, Mandi House, Anand Vihar, New Ashok Nagar and Jahangirpuri. "Strategically located Metro stations like Patel Chowk, Race Course, Udyog Bhawan and AIIMS are also on the list for having police booths," added Meena.

DU, students' body lock horns over sealing of DUSU office
New Delhi, April 14 Post the incident on April 7, the joint secretary of DUSU who allegedly smeared shoe polish on the face of the South Campus director was rusticated for three years and DUSU office rooms was shut down for which the administration drew a lot of flak from various quarters, including the DU Teachers' Association (DUTA) over its "alacrity" in expelling the student a day after the incident and closing the DUSU office. Following this, the administration today claimed that it had provided an alternate office at the conference centre and one of the DUSU office-bearers even agreed to it while the DUSU has rubbished the university's claim as "false and an after-thought". According to the administration, the DUSU offices were temporarily shifted while the preliminary fact-finding probe was underway since April 8. The report of the preliminary exercise, submitted today and in view of this the offices are being reopened with the exception of the office of the joint secretary. "After the preliminary assessment, an enquiry committee will be instituted. Details have been formalised. An announcement regarding this will be made tomorrow. At no point of time have DUSU office-bearers denied the use of office facilities," clarified DU registrar Prof Alka Sharma. On the issue of rustication of Raju Rawat, the registrar underlined that the action was on the basis of previous enquiry into the January 2 incident when he had allegedly manhandled officials of the finance department and not as "erroneously" projected by "a section of media and a few students" due to the recent attack. "He was rusticated based on the previous enquiry whose report was submitted this month. He had assaulted officials in the finance department and broke furniture. An FIR was lodged and he submitted an apology. This time he perhaps knew about the preliminary finding and pre-empting he did what he did recently. He has a history of violence and it is obnoxious to see what has been reported on the matter," said Prof Sharma. However, the DUSU is not ready to buy the administration's argument vowing to carry out a demonstration tomorrow. Its president Aman Awana condemned the administration's move calling it a clear instance of politicisation given the fact that majority of top office-bearers are from the ABVP. "The administration is cooking up stories now and all its claims are false. The DUSU offices were shut and no DUSU office-bearer was either informed about any alternative arrangement or allowed to enter the offices as the main gate outside was also locked and many guards were deployed outside the office," he said demanding an unconditional apology for the clamp down. The DUSU questioned the administration on its action taken in the case of slapping of a teacher publicly in the law faculty last year by the then DUSU president occupied by the NSUI, accusing it of double standards. "The university then took all steps to save him, thus making it clear that the administration has acted in this manner with a malafide intention," said DU ABVP secretary Saket Bahuguna. Sharing the administration's version, Prof Sharma asserted, "There was no formal complaint and we had received some mails and on the basis of them we wrote to the
Proctor for enquiry. A response was submitted which stated that the matter was settled after mutual agreement between the two parties." |
