Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 13
The Congress has decided to send its Delhi MLAs and other local leaders to Amethi to expose Aam Aadmi Party candidate, Kumar Vishwas. In his speech recently, Vishwas had alleged that Congress candidate and its vice-president Rahul Gandhi, a sitting MP, never visited the villages located in the interior areas.

According to Vishwas, the condition of the villages has become worse during the last 10 years. Gandhi has never visited the villages.

According to sources, in a move to counter Vishwas' propaganda, all the eight MLAs, Haroon Yusuf, who is the Congress Legislative Party leader in the Delhi assembly, Arvinder Singh Lovely, DPCC president, Dalit leader Jai Kishan and former MLA Raj Kumar Chauhan will leave for Amethi.

The sources said that Delhi leaders would explain the 'maladministration' of 49 days of AAP government during which there was a total chaos in the city. Delhi Secretariat was converted into another Jantar Mantar where a large number of NGOs and others staged protest. The AAP had assured people of cheap water, power and corruption-free government, but when the time was to deliver, the Chief Minister and his cabinet ministers resigned leaving the citizens in the lurch.

According to the sources, Muslim leaders like Asif Muhammad Khan, Hassan Ahmed Khan and Mateen Ahmed would also canvass for the Congress in Amethi. They would highlight the development work done by the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government in the minority-dominated areas. Schemes for the students of minority communities like scholarship and fee reimbursement would also be mentioned.

DU to introduce MA in Lifelong Learning and Extension
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 13
With a view to bridging the gap between the patterns of higher education in India and abroad, the Delhi University's Department of Adult, Continuing Education and Extension (DACEE) is introducing an M.A. programme on 'Lifelong Learning and Extension' from the 2014 academic year.

Characterised by various components of social science-formal, informal and non-formal aspects, the unique interdisciplinary course aims towards enhancing practical skills and employability opportunities in teaching and academia, public and private sectors, NGOs and consultancy agencies, among others.

Its syllabus has been designed in line with the international education model, in particular European Commission's Master of Arts in Lifelong Learning in consultation with the experts of EU and UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning.

According to head of DACEE Dr Rajesh, the UGC considers extension as the third dimension of higher education with learning and research being the other two components and this course is a step in that direction.

"The unique course is being introduced for the first time in the country and has four papers in line with EU and UNESCO-Adult and Lifelong Learning in India and at global level, Extension and Community Outreach, Research Methodology and Practicum," he said.

Elaborating, he stated, "This is a course which gives due weight to theory, practicum and credit-based internship opportunities to the students. It has a great employment potential in various government and non-governmental institutions. The corporate and the voluntary sectors will also be roped in."

Even as the Master's programme has been developed to provide professional manpower in the field of education management, there are opportunities galore for young students, said DU officials while adding that they will get hands-on experience of different educational practices, policymaking and analysing along with community learning.

The industry-university linkages will enable them to comprehend the needs of the market while offering chance for campus placements to the aspiring learners, they added.

Another faculty member from the department, Dr. S. Mandal, stressed that learning itself is a lifelong activity and it does not end with schooling.

Dr Rajesh and Dr V.K. Dixit, another faculty member from the department, opine that the programme is different in many ways, from the existing adult education programmes at the university level in India and such lessons should be integral part of higher education system. This programme focuses on the entire educational spectrum, they added.

Further, in line with UNESCO's parameters for learning, the programme provides space for accreditation, validation and recognition. Prior to this, the department instituted six papers in discipline II level under the Four Year Undergraduate Programme. Students with the six papers at discipline II will be eligible for the Master's course.

The last date of online registration of the programme is April 18, 2014, which can be done by logging into the University of Delhi website, under PG Admission Portal.

Exams with multiple-choice questions will be held on June 25.

BJP may form state govt if it wins LS polls
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 13
The Delhi BJP may think of forming government in the city if it comes to power at the Centre. There may be some initiative in this regard after May 16, when the results of the Lok Sabha elections are declared, sources in the party said.

According to the sources, the BJP had 31 seats and one Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal). It is short of four seats for forming the government in the 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly. Though Delhi BJP president Dr Harsh Vardhan, who was chief ministerial candidate during the assembly election, had reiterated a number of times that he did not believe in horse trading, the sources said MLAs of the other parties are interested in supporting the saffron party.

But three BJP MLAs - Pravesh Verma from Mehrauli, Ramesh Bidhuri from Tughlakabad and Dr Harsh Vardhan from Geeta Colony - have contested the Lok Sabha elections. If they win the Lok Sabha elections, the party may form the government after by-elections.

The BJP is the single largest party in the Delhi Legislative Assembly though the AAP that had only 28 seats formed the government with the support of the Congress.
