Vector-borne diseases stare city in face: Walia
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 29
Delhi is at risk of the vector-borne diseases as high breeding of aedes mosquito has been detected in June owing to conductive weather, said Delhi Health Minister Dr AK Walia.

Senior health officials expressed concerns as the Directorate of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) has indicated a container index (C.I.) of 12.9 and house index (H.I.) of 6.7 in Delhi Cantt, which are very high.

He said that some other areas showing a high breeding of aedes mosquito include Minto Road, Jahagirpuri J.J. Colony, Jharoda Dairy, Sangam Vihar, Kishan Ganj, Mangolpur Khurd.

The situation was reviewed in a high level meeting attended by senior officials of the Delhi Government, municipal corporations, Delhi Cantonment Board, New Delhi Municipal Council, NVBDCP, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The Health Minister also noted the report of NCDC highlighting that its virus antigen detection laboratory has tested the 44 pools of 548 aedes mosquitoes collected during April and May. Dengue virus was detected in seven localities: Harkesh Nagar, Narela, Paharganj, Sant Nagar, Deragaon, Seemapuri and Mandigaon.

“There is need for utmost caution and high-level preparedness with regard to the outbreak of water and vector-borne diseases during the current weather conditions marked by intermittent showers and fluctuations in temperatures,” said Dr Walia.

The daily reports of the Directorate of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme on larval cross-checking in Delhi also indicate high larval presence in some localities, noted Dr Walia. They are: Netaji Nagar (E-Block), Sanjay Camp (Moti Nagar), CPWD Nursery (Sarojini Nagar), Mausam Bhawan, PWD Officer Karkardooma, Sarai Rohilla, IGNOU Maidan Garhi, IIT Campus Hauz Khas, District Centre Saket and Mahavir Enclave.

Cop shot at while trying to stop snatching
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 29
A Delhi Police constable on patrol in East Delhi’s Mayur Vihar Phase-I area was allegedly shot at today when he tried to save a woman from two miscreants who attempted to snatch her jewellery.

The victim, Sandeep Punia, was hit by a bullet in his left arm by the pillion rider of the motorcycle and is now out of danger. He is recuperating at Jeevan Anmol Hospital, they said.

The incident occurred this afternoon at the DDA Market, Acharya Niketan, in the Pandav Nagar police station area when Punia tried to check a theft bid by the duo, after hearing a cry from a woman, the police said.

He saw the two men trying to snatch jewellery from her, after which he intercepted and attempted to save her but the man riding the pillion threatened to shoot him and then fired at him in the left arm, the police said.

While the mob managed to nab the accused (pillion rider), the accomplice escaped.

BJP seeks CM’s apology for ‘inept’ water remark
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 29
The BJP today demanded an apology from Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for her alleged statement that “no one should complain about water in Delhi as no one has died of thirst here so far”.

Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said, “The Chief Minister is misleading the common people by trying to shift blame of poor water supply on lack of supply from the other states. The fact is that at least 40 per cent of the water is getting wasted due to poor water management in the city. We only need to plug this leakage and there will be sufficient water for Delhi. But the DJB has failed to do this during the last 15 years.”

While the water tariff has shot up by 1000 per cent during the last 15 years, the water supply to the households has been reduced and its quality has gone down. There are at least 100 spots where sewage is seeping into the drinking water supply, said Goel.

“Instead of fixing accountability, the Chief Minister is humiliating people by saying that no one has died of thirst in Delhi. So no one should protest,” he said.

In the wake of recent deaths due to contaminated water in the NCERT colony, such an ‘insensitive’ statement is shocking and shows the Congress government’s lack of concern about the problems of common people, he said.

Professional management of the Delhi Jal Board is all that is required and the Chief Minister who is chairperson of the board has failed in this regard, Delhi BJP president said.

Malhotra blames govt for poor civic amenities
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 29
Criticizing Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for lack of civic amenities in the city, the Leader of the Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Prof. Vijay Kumar Malhotra, today said it is due to the criminal negligence of the state government that people are facing the outbreak of diseases.

In a statement, Prof Malhotra said that while water tax and sewerage charges have been raised, basic amenities are still not available to the people.

Rebutting the Chief Minister’s statement that only 40 per cent of the city area does not have a proper sewage system, the BJP leader said that even in the remaining area, the system has broken down and is leading to a risky situation as dirty water of the broken sewage pipes either flows out on the street or seeps into the pipes carrying drinking water.

“The Chief Minister’s admission that her government has not been able to provide drinking water to every citizen in the Capital exposes her. The government has virtually squeezed the common citizen with taxes in the name of development and making Delhi a world-class city,” said Prof Malhotra.
