Pay high tariff if you use AC, Dikshit chides Kejriwal
Delhi Govt plans holding areas for migrants
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 28
Reacting to the recent controversy of her posters at the back of autorickshaws put up by Aam Admi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal calling her corrupt, an unperturbed Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit called it a beauty of democracy. “With elections around the corner, allegations and accusations are bound to take place. This is the beauty of democracy,” she said.

Following the massive agitation against Dikshit’s government in March, alleging that it helped private power companies in increasing the power tariff, Kejriwal stirred up the controversy by putting up posters on autorickshaws, calling the Chief Minister corrupt and warning people that rapes in the city would continue if she was voted to power again.

However, Dikshit took a jibe at Kejriwal for his agitation against the ‘inflated’ power bills, by saying that people who use air-conditioners would have to pay high tariff.

“In the last few years, the sale of generators has declined in Delhi and the sale of ACs (air-conditioners) has risen sharply. If you use an AC, you will have to pay its electricity bill. But Kejriwal does not talk about that,” Dikshit said.

“His (Kejriwal) power was cut as he did not pay the bill,” chuckled Dikshit while speaking at a seminar ‘Delhi: Kal, Aaj Aur Kal’, organised by the Associate Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

Earlier, Kejriwal had accused the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) of disconnecting the electricity connection of his house at Kaushambi in Ghaziabad district, near Delhi, for non-payment of his bill. The power utility denied the allegation, saying that it neither cut Kejriwal’s power connection nor restored it.

On the issue of illegal settlements in the Capital, the Chief Minister said that the Delhi Government is mulling over setting up holding areas for thousands of migrants who come to the city every year in search of livelihood.

Dikshit said that the city needs to provide for large numbers of migrants, and still be watchful so that there are no major calamities.

“In Uttarakhand, people are now saying that it is a man-made disaster because of the several unplanned constructions. We need to get rid of the jhuggis (shanties) and unauthorised settlements,” she said.

“Politicians like me and others have been greedy and thought of these colonies as vote banks, but it is time to think about Delhi,” she said.

“We are thinking of getting holding areas for people who come here in search of work to get rid of jhuggis and illegal settlements,” the Chief Minister added.

Won’t allow high-rises at any rate: CM

New Delhi, June 28
Opposing Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath’s push for a vertical growth in the city, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said she won’t allow the construction of high-rise buildings as long as she is ‘alive’.

“I agree with you that eventually perhaps Delhi will need high-rise buildings. But it will not be allowed as long as I am alive,” she said at a function organised by Assocham.

The Chief Minister has been opposing the vertical expansion, arguing that it will put additional stress on the existing resources and infrastructure in the city besides severely impacting the ecology.

Earlier this month, Delhi’s Urban Development Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely had supported Nath’s push for vertical expansion but demanded adequate central funds for enhancing the existing infrastructure.

“We absolutely have no problem with vertical expansion of Delhi. But when approval is given to high-rises, we will have to strengthen the existing infrastructure like sewerage, water distribution system and power transmission. The Centre will have to provide the Delhi Government with funds for enhancing the infrastructure,” Lovely had said.

Earlier, a number of speakers had underlined the need for allowing vertical growth of the city. The Union Urban Development Minister has been strongly pitching for the high-rise buildings in Delhi to accommodate the growing population.

The notice was sent yesterday, said a senior DMRC official.

“The Board of Directors of DMRC today met to discuss the letter of Reliance (DAMEPL) dated June 27 intimating that they would stop operating the Airport Line from the night of June 30,” said the official.

The Board concluded that the notice is in violation of the concession agreement and the ongoing arbitration proceedings.

“The Board decided to reject the notice and call upon them to continue the operations of the line in terms of the agreement. If they do not do so, DMRC shall step in and operate the line in larger public interest,” he said.
