Soon, elevated roads to ease traffic jams at Mehrauli
New Delhi, June 26 The issue of easing overcrowding, congestion and longer traffic jams in Mehrauli was today discussed in a high level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The meeting was organized at the instance of Delhi Vidhan Sabha Speaker Yoganand Shastri and was attended by PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan, Chief Secretary D.M. Spolia, Secretary (Environment) Sanjiv Kumar, Vice-Chairman (DDA) Dipti Vilasa and senior officials from the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and other agencies concerned, apart from eminent residents of Mehrauli. The tentative alignment was also discussed in the meeting. It was decided to appoint a consultant to complete spade works at the earliest in order to the enable the government to move towards constructions. Dr. Shastri stated that the PWD has already conducted a preliminary survey which needs to be properly studied for an immediate action. "The better connectivity is looking feasible by constructing two separate roads from Mehrauli Bus Terminus to M.B. Road near Anuvrat Marg Ahimsa Sthal with a length of 1.2 km and from Shahi Idgah to Arun Asaf Ali Marg via Sanjav Van with a length of 1 km," said Dikshit. She stated that all the agencies, including Environment and Forests, ASI, DDA and PWD will have to work in tandem to overcome objections to be raised by any of the affected agency. The officials presented the opinion that the present single narrow road connecting Mehrauli to other parts of the city does not suffice the quantum of traffic as the historical town of Mehrauli has witnessed substantial expansion and increase in population, resulting in the road being overcrowded and congested. "The present situation is causing longer traffic jams and inconvenience to the residents and tourists. Either elevated roads, widened surface roads or suitable underpasses could be constructed without affecting archaeological monuments," said Dr Shastri. The basic idea is to provide relief to the residents at the earliest, hence, the government may instruct the agencies to expedite completion of consultant's report, he said. |
