Power suspended in low-lying areas
New Delhi, June 19
BSES Rajdhani Power Limited has suspended electricity to the residents in the low-lying areas along the river bed. The areas include Vishkarma Colony, Jaitpur, Dhobi Ghat, Near Masjid Khallilullah Batla House.

Soon shelters for sufferers of domestic violence

After the launch of helpline for women in distress, the Delhi Government has decided to open “distress centres” for middle-class women suffering from domestic violence where they can take temporary refuge in case of torture by their family members or relatives.

The Delhi Government today asked the flood victims not to panic as measures are being taken for their relief. Around 5,000 people have been evacuated and provided with shelter in 19 camps in different places.

A person bathing at Majnu Ka Tila drowned in the flood. His body is yet to be recovered, said Delhi government officials. The administration has also rescued four dogs, left behind by the owners. In all, 62 boats and a number of divers have been deployed. The boats have been deployed in 15 different places.

There is an apprehension that certain low-lying areas may face disruption in the supply of power. The administration is taking steps to repair the lines.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit accompanied by Revenue Minister Arvinder Singh, Revenue Secretary Dharam Pal and Deputy Commissioners today visited the camps for flood victims and many places along the Yamuna bank to take stock of the arrangements.

The Chief Minister said that more pumping sets would be procured.

The highest-ever water has been released from Hathini Kund this year and there has been an unprecedented rainfall during June.

The water level of the Yamuna has also touched 207.20 metre at 7.00 pm today which is the highest so far. The Yamuna water crossed the danger mark yesterday.

Earlier in 1978, it reached 207.49 metre and in 2010, it touched 207.11 metre.

Keeping in view the highest water level, the government has deployed its personnel and resources for rescue and relief measures.

The farmers in riverbed area and the residents have been evacuated and put in various camps. The administration is making public announcements and also disseminating helpline numbers.

Dikshit visited camps near Mayur Vihar, Phase-I, DND Flyover, Nursery Khader Mayur Vihar Phase-I and other camps.

She said that the government has taken all possible steps to provide the essential items in the camps.

“The administration is alert and ready to response as per the situation. All the Deputy Commissioners have been coordinating the relief measures in various camps. The government is ready to meet any eventuality,” added the Chief Minister.

Power suspended in low-lying areas

BSES Rajdhani Power Limited has suspended electricity to the residents in the low-lying areas along the river bed. The areas include Vishkarma Colony, Jaitpur, Dhobi Ghat, Near Masjid Khallilullah Batla House.

In the low-lying areas that have been evacuated for safety measures, BYPL has switched off 82 power connections in the Badarpur Khader area falling in the Karawal Nagar division.

In the Yamuna Vihar district, 172 connections have been switched off in the low-lying areas of Garhi Mandu, Usmanpur, Gurudwara Nanakpur and Bela.

Electricity has been suspended in these areas till further notice.

“BRPL’s nodal officers are monitoring the situation round the clock. They are in regular touch with the agencies, including the Flood Control district administration office to assist in any situation,” said a senior BRPL official.

The official said that BYPL has mapped all the assets in its distribution area on GIS, which are within 500 metres of the Yamuna. The river flows through eight divisions in its operational areas.

“On request from the Delhi Jal Board, connections to two rainey wells each in Lakshmi Nagar and Krishna Nagar divisions have been disconnected.,” said the official.

Soon shelters for sufferers of domestic violence

After the launch of helpline for women in distress, the Delhi Government has decided to open “distress centres” for middle-class women suffering from domestic violence where they can take temporary refuge in case of torture by their family members or relatives.

The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) and the Department for Women and Child Development, Delhi Government, has finalized a plan for the construction of two such modernized centres which will be operational next month. These centres will be in the form of guesthouses where apart from providing the necessary facilities, food will be made available to the victims.

Minister of Women and Child Development Kiran Walia said that these centres will be different form other welfare homes. The DUSIB has provided land to build one such centre each in south and central Delhi. “The DUSIB has allocated land near Sunlight Colony in south Delhi and on Deen Dayal Upadhayay Marg, which is near to Mata Sundri College, in central Delhi,” said Prof Walia.

She said that the government has planned to inaugurate them by July 15.

She said that the centre in south Delhi will be built for 50 women whereas the one in central Delhi will be for 20 women initially. The layout plan for both the centres has also been given final approval.

This is the first of its kind initiative by the government that focuses on middle-class afflicted women suffering harassment and domestic violence at the hands of their husbands or in-laws.

Record FYUP applicants on last day

As Delhi University made record registrations for admission to its new Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) on the closing day, among the applicants were those who were either refilling or resubmitting the Optical Magnetic Resonance (OMR) forms today.

There were also many aspirants who though hopeful of qualifying the cut-offs of various colleges through the extra-curricular activities (ECA) and sports category’s five per cent advantage remained the most harried lot.

Until the close of the form submission, DU saw a record sale of OMR forms (1,63,466) even as the completed registrations stood at 1,26,704 while the online registration is said to have tripled this year (200 per cent increase) as compared to last year.

“The total sale of OMR forms till evening was 1,63,466 which is a record as compared to last year’s 1,64000, including online and offline. Under the SC/ST category the registrations have increased by more than 100 pc because last year only 23,000 had enrolled whereas this year 47484, SC/ST/PWD admissions seekers have already registered with online continuing,” said Dean Students’ Welfare Prof JM Khurana.

For the ECA or sports benefits, interested candidates had to make several rounds of colleges and campuses to confirm the availability of seats under respective categories in the absence of any handy information about the details of colleges offering the benefits. Separate forms were available at colleges for those applying under these categories.
