Baseless charges defame city: CM

New Delhi, June 8
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today accused the opposition BJP of levelling ‘baseless’ allegations and said the people of the city are well aware of the ‘reality’.

“Those who are levelling baseless allegations are defaming the city of Delhi. They levelled allegations after the Commonwealth Games, which were dismissed by the agencies like the CAG and the Shunglu Committee. They have once again started a similar tirade against the government,” Dikshit said.

The Chief Minister was addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone of a 2.1-km-long corridor between Prembari Pul and Azadpur on Ring Road in north Delhi.

Dikshit’s attack on the BJP came a day after senior BJP leader Vijender Gupta filed a complaint with the CBI, seeking a probe against Dikshit for the alleged misuse of public funds for an advertisement campaign ahead of Assembly polls in 2008 for which the Lokayukta had indicted her last month.

The Chief Minister said the 2.1-km-long corridor will include 1.6-km-long elevated road. Listing various achievements of her government, she said it has done everything possible to ensure an overall development of every section of society.

She also inaugurated a footover bridge in the Shakurpur Colony in east Delhi in the presence of Union Minister Kapil Sibal.

The accused identified as Netarpal was arrested yesterday. He runs a TV cable business.

A police official said the victim lives with her parents in Kanjhawala.

“The accused knew her parents. He would often come to her house to fix the cable. When her parents were not present, he would rape her. It is a continued offence,” said a senior police official.

He has also threatened her with dire consequences, added the police official.

New Delhi, June 8
Refuting the alleged misleading statements of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit over corruption issue, the BJP president Vijay Goel today asked her as to why she had never called an all-party meeting over the crucial issues like power, water and law and order.

Countering the Chief Minister’s statement that charges against her would defame Delhi, Goel said, “Delhi has been defamed by the poor law and order situation, earning the tag of ‘rape capital’. The CM has been charged with corruption by the constitutional bodies like the CAG, Lokayukta and the Shunglu Committee.”

He said that the city is bearing the onslaught of crimes against women and the Chief Minister is busy shifting blame on others.

Goel reiterated that the BJP is committed to bringing down power tariff by 30 per cent and making the city safer, especially for women.

Khurshid stresses road sense with a sense of humour!
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 8
Union Minister of External Affairs Salman Khurshid seems to be a great fan of 007 James Bond and his beautiful girls!

One could detect his love when Khurshid specifically mentioned one of Bond’s girls, Michelle Yeoh, at a ceremony at India International Centre here on Friday night. Hollywood actor Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh Choo-Kheng is best known for her roles in the 1997 Bond film ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’.

The occasion was the felicitation of world-famous road safety expert T. K. Malhotra’s unanimous election as a Member on the World Council for Automobile Mobility and Tourism at the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) annual general assembly in Istanbul.

While emphasizing the need for a regular campaign for safe driving and road manners, Khurshid said in a lighter vein, “I have come to know that Malhotra shook hands with James Bond 007 girl Michelle Yeoh at the FIA regional meeting in Vienna last month. Hope, she did not whisper in his ears that ‘You are my James Bond’.”

Smiling, Khurshid said, “While no Bond has survived more than three or four films, Malhotra has been continuing on ‘Mission Road Safety’ for over four decades.”
