Tribune Reporters

Karnal/Panipat, June 8
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda launched the Priyadarshini Awas Yojna in Karnal today with the online transfer of the first instalment of the cash subsidy of Rs 25,000 to 30 beneficiaries.

He said Haryana was the first state to implement the scheme. He added that 28 of the beneficiaries were Dalits and two belonged to backward classes.

A day after Union minister Selja and AICC general secretary Chaudhary Birender Singh targeted his government for reportedly neglecting the interests of Dalits and backward classes, the Chief Minister launched a frontal attack on his detractors without naming them.

He said, "You cannot know sitting in bungalows in New Delhi how many Dalits and backward class families have been given 100 square yard plots. Go to villages to know the ground reality from 4-lakh-odd Dalit and backward class beneficiaries."

Congress legislator Balbir Pal Shah launched the scheme in Panipat.

Mullana complains against Selja, MPs

Chandigarh, June 8
A day after Rajya Sabha MP Ishwar Singh hosted his conference to bring out the “growing atrocities against the Dalits under the Congress rule” in Karnal, Haryana Congress chief Phool Chand Mullana made out a case of “anti-party activity” against him.

Sources said Mullana complained to the party high command against the MP, Union Minister Selja as also Rajya Sabha MP Birender Singh for their “anti-party stance” during the conference.

The sources said in his letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi and general secretary in charge of Haryana BK Hariprasad, Mullana has sought a “ban” on the hosting of such conferences in future. He maintained that given their tone and tenor, these are clearly against the interest of the party and the government in the state. Stating that rather than being a “pro-Dalit” conference, the programme turned out to be “anti-party”, Mullana is learnt to have emphasised that “these are damaging the Congress in the state.”

Maintaining that Dalits are completely safe in Haryana with absolutely no issues, especially, since the pro-Dalit Congress government has taken a number of welfare initiatives, he said an “anti-government” idea was behind the hosting of the conference. He added that the senior party leaders were critical of the government when there was neither any basis nor need for such a conference.

This complaint by Mullana against Ishwar Singh is another of the half a dozen complaints he has already sent to the party high command. While he initially sought the high command’s intervention to disallow the conference, a couple of other complaints were based on grievances expressed by the district unit chiefs of Kurukshetra and Karnal.

Protest against erratic power, water supply
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, June 8
In a protest against the erratic power and drinking water supply, a number of residents of local Jawahar Nagar and Subhash Nagar blocked the main road passing through the colonies for around two hours by putting iron beams on the road today.

On receiving information, state vice-president of the BJP Rajiv Jain reached the spot and discussed the problems with the power officials and the residents. The power officials explained that efforts were being made to install a new transformer in the area, but it could not become possible following protest by some of the residents.

However, the blockade was lifted when the power officials assured that a new transformer would be installed on Monday.

Jain said most of the power cuts in the railway line crossing colonies were due to non-functioning of the newly installed transformer at the Suraj Steel Plant and it was likely to be made functional on Tuesday.

Hisar, June 8
Three incidents of chain snatching in a span of less than an hour in two different localities of the town in broad daylight have sent Hisar residents in a tizzy. The incidents occurred in Urban Estate and Sector 13, Part II of Hisar - both localities being opposite to each other near Dabra Chowk on the Delhi road.

The first incident occurred this noon in Sector 13, Part II, where a woman Inderjit Kaur, a Chandigarh resident, who had come to see her brother in Hisar, was standing at the main gate of the house with her sister-in-law when two youths came on a motorcycle. One of them walked up to them and calmly walked towards his motorcycle after snatching her gold chain. The youth, who snatched her gold chain, was wearing red t-shirt. The youth took out a pistol when the woman tried to chase him.

The second incident took place in Urban Estate, when a woman Rituraj Rani was returning home with her two children. Two youths came near her on a motorcycle and sped away after snatching her gold chain. When she raised an alarm and tried to chase them, a miscreant took out a pistol and scared her.

The third incident occurred almost 15 minutes from the first and within the next 15 minutes, the miscreants had snatched another gold chain in the Urban Estate area. The victim, Shikha, had visited her neighbour and when she was returning home, the motorcycle-borne miscreants snatched away her gold chain. The youths were captured in the CCTV camera installed outside a house in the colony. Hisar SP Rahul Sharma said the CCTV footage had not proved very helpful to the police as it was not clear. However, the police was preparing sketches of the miscreants based on information provided by the three victims and added that the sketches would be released soon. The broad daylight incidents in the posh colonies situated in the heart of the city have left local residents scared.
