As many as 1,686 candidates will slug it out from the 144 wards of the seven MCs of Ambala, Panchkula, Karnal, Panipat, Hisar, Rohtak and Yamunanagar in the contest billed as the semifinal ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha and state assembly elections.

Nearly 17.08 lakh voters will decide the fate of the candidates at 1,696 polling stations across the municipalities amid tight security. Out of 1,696 polling stations, 251 have been declared sensitive and 335 as hyper-sensitive. There will be heavy police deployment at these polling stations, Dharam Vir, State Election Commissioner, said.

Over 9,050 police personnel, including 35 DSPs and 109 Inspectors, would be deployed at polling stations to prevent any untoward incident. Substantial police force, including the Haryana Armed Police and India Reserved Battalion, have been stationed in reserve at suitable locations in each corporation so that it can reach any place in the shortest possible time, the official said. In addition, there would be one or more police patrol parties in each ward. These parties would visit the polling stations from the start of poll to the close of poll and departure of polling parties.

Official sources said over 9,000 officials would be deployed to conduct these elections in a free and fair manner. Besides, to monitor the situation at the polling stations, there would be a large number of mobile parties in each corporation area, he said. They included 186 parties of supervisory officers and 152 of magistrates.

Bikes, LCDs, phone sets on offer for votes in Karnal
Tribune News Service

Karnal, June 1
Candidates contesting the Karnal Municipal Corporation elections are on tenterhooks as allurements like free ration, mobile phones, LCD and liquor galore on the eve of polling scheduled for tomorrow.

Some candidates and their poll managers have alleged that mysterious slips for ration to the poor, mobile phones and bikes to youths, LCDs and liquor are being issued to voters by rich candidates.

A candidate of ward no. 9 in Karnal alleged that a slip for issuing free ration to voters with their names intercepted, but it was not clear that who had the slip and from where the ration was to be drawn. Moreover, the voters were demanding liquor and other favours before the poll.

Keen contest is on the cards in many wards in the Karnal MC as about 24 ex-councilors of the former Karnal Municipal Council have entered the fray and in most of the wards, both BJP and the Congress are plagued by dissidents, giving edge to some powerful independents. There were 31 wards in the Municipal Council, but the number of wards has been reduced to 20 in the Municipal Corporation leading to a clash among ex-councilors in some wards.

The BJP had expelled 19 rebels for contesting against official party candidates, but the rebels are unfazed and alleged that merit, integrity and hard work of candidates were ignored. Some of the rich and wealthy candidates who were given tickets had joined the BJP in the run up to the poll and these turncoats have found favour with the state party leadership, which was unfortunate, he added.

Former chairman of Karnal Municipal council Suresh Gupta has entered the fray from ward no. 13 and is also supporting many independents in different wards. Gupta’s, close relative Renu gupta is also contesting elections from ward no. 12, backed by the BJP-HJC and even the INLD has not fielded candidate against her, making it clear that it was Renu Gupta versus other independents.

Contrary to expectations, not many kins of prominent politicians are in the fray for the MC poll in Karnal. Although, several state leaders are backing their loyalists and relatives of some local leaders are in the fray, former Haryana Industries Minister Shashi Pal Mehta’s son, Sanjeev Mehta, is the lone person contesting from ward no. 3 on a BJP ticket.

Meanwhile, a leading NGO, National Integrated Forum of Artists and Activists (NIFAA), has alleged that a large number of voters had made double registration and said about 250 such voters were registered in one ward alone. Naresh Barana, National Convenor of the NIFAA, said, “We will try to check fake voting and vigorously raise the issue to expose and book such voters and the officials who aided them in making double votes.”

30 polling booths in Hisar hyper-sensitive
Tribune News Service

Hisar, June 1
The authorities have identified 30 polling booths as hyper-sensitive and 86 as sensitive and made elaborate security arrangements on these booths as Hisar goes to the Municipal Corporation polls tomorrow.

Hisar Deputy Commissioner ML Kaushik said the authorities had identified these booths based on previous record of violence.

Ward 18 of the city has the maximum number of seven hypersensitive booths followed by ward 4 that has four hypersensitive booths.

Wards 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, 15 and 19 do not have any hypersensitive booth.

"We have deployed extra force on sensitive and hypersensitive booths and additional forces will be sent to these booths immediately in case of any incident," said Rahul Sharma, SP, Hisar.

Meanwhile, returning officer for Hisar Municipal Corporation poll Ashok Kumar Garg said polling parties had been dispatched to all 20 wards of the corporation.

With only a few hours left for the polling, the candidates contesting the poll have been making their last-ditch efforts for wooing voters.

With an obvious attempt to malign the reputation of rival candidates, supporters of some candidates have been spreading rumours casting aspersions on those close to the rival candidates.

Meanwhile, satta market is also active in the poll and according to conservative estimates, betting worth Rs 200 crore has been placed on the victory of various candidates.
