UT Administration reduces speed limits
Chandigarh, June 1
The UT Administration has reduced the speed limits for vehicles in the city. In view of a large number of people losing their lives in road accidents, the Chandigarh police had sent a proposal to the administration demanding the speed limits should be brought down.

All set for P’kula MC poll today
Panchkula, June 1
Panchkula is all set to witness the battle of the ballot with the much-awaited Municipal Corporation elections to be held tomorrow (June 2). The fate of 160 candidates contesting the elections from 20 wards in the district would be sealed in ballot boxes tomorrow.

1,500 bottles of liquor seized in Panchkula

Haryana policemen refresh themselves by playing cards and taking a nap in Panchkula on Saturday The Panchkula police has seized over 1,500 bottles of liquor that were being supplied to woo voters in various areas during the election campaigning. The police has also recommended the names of some candidates to the State Election Commissioner and the Excise Department who were supplying the liquor to the slum areas.

87,633 voters to cast vote today
Kalka, June 1
As many as 87,633 voters will cast their votes on Sunday for the election of Ward No 1 to Ward No. 6 of the Kalka, Pinjore Zone of the Municipal Corporation, Panchkula. As many as 75 polling booths have been set up in this zone.

BJP workers allege misuse of government machinery
Ambala, June 1
Local BJP workers led by its state spokesperson Veer Kumar Yadav staged a dharna in front of the Baldev Nagar police station today evening. They were protesting against the distribution of polling booth slips along with the pamphlet of Congress-supported candidate of Ward No. 2 by some government officials.

Sukhna eco-sensitive zone declaration to take time
Chandigarh, June 1
Entrance to the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary The declaration of an eco-sensitive zone around the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary is all set to be delayed as the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has received 280 proposals, including one from the UT Administration, from different states and Union Territories about declaring the areas around the national parks and sanctuaries as eco-sensitive zones.

Defamation case
Ex-Director, lecturer of GMCH-32 summoned
Chandigarh, June 1
A local court has summoned Dr Raj Bahadur, former Director, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, and Dr Gurjit Kaur, senior lecturer of the Department of Physiology, GMCH 32, in a three-year-old defamation case.

Investigation transferred to Crime Branch

The Chandigarh police has transferred the investigation into the case of missing of Mahavir, a class IV employee of Panjab University (PU) and a permanent resident of Garhwal, from Police Station 11 to the Crime Branch. The orders were issued by Naunihal Singh, SSP, Chandigarh.

The scramble for the class XI admission is all set to begin in UT as Chandigarh Education Department will start admission process in local government schools from June 11. Increase in cut-off percentage is going to be a major worry, as there is a massive increase in students securing 10 CGPA in tricity.

PU to have mentoring system for freshers
Chandigarh June 1
In order to provide a personalised guidance and mentoring to the freshers, Panjab University (PU) has decided to adopt a unique mentoring system. According to this system, each faculty member would advise five or 10 students joining the university professional courses on their personal, academic, social and other problems and suggest solutions to those problems. Every year, about 4,000 students take new admissions in the PU campus and there are about 800 faculty members.

25 kg of poppy husk seized
Ropar, June 1
The police today seized 25 kg of poppy husk from a passenger. The accused, identified as Sachin, a resident of Bijnaur in UP, was carrying the contraband in a plastic bag. He reached the local raiway staion via Himachal Express today morning.

LOK ADALAT
5,632 cases disposed of
Chandigarh, June 1
As many as 5,632 cases of different categories were disposed of in a Lok Adalat held at a local court today. As many as 359 cases were settled under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments (NI) Act. A compensation of Rs 2.3 lakh was awarded in the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) cases.

Drug peddler gets 2-year jail
Mohali, June 1
A local court today announced a two-year sentence and Rs 20,000 as fine to an accused for possessing around 750 grams of opium. Mohali Additional District and Sessions Judge PP Singh awarded a two-year sentence to Gian Singh, a resident of Naianwaala village, Dera Bassi, who was arrested by the police at a naka with 750 grams of opium on December 22, 2009.
