A man and his daughter were burnt to death while his son is battling for life after a fire broke out in their house at Kalyanpuri in East Delhi this morning. The deceased are identified as Tarachand (48) and his 18-year-old daughter, Meenakshi. Tarachand’s son, Harish (26), is undergoing treatment at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in East Delhi.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Fire department officials claim that the blaze started in the kitchen.

Tarachand lived with his wife, Krishna Devi and daughter, Meenakshi on the ground floor of the house. His sons, Harish and Kukku, live on the first floor. A tenant is on the second floor of the house.

The fire broke out at about 8 am. Sources said that Kukku made tea for Krishna, who was undergoing treatment at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital. After Kukku had left for the hospital, a fire started in the kitchen engulfing the entire house.

Some of the victims were trapped inside the house. A call was made to the police after a smoke was noticed. The fire department was also informed.

Three fire tenders and some water tankers were rushed to the house. The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes. A few fire department officials went inside and found three persons in an unconscious condition.

They were taken to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where Tarachand and Meenakshi were declared dead. Harish was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital.

New Delhi, June 11
The travellers of Delhi Metro’s busy Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre line had a harrowing time this morning with services disrupted for nearly two hours after a train broke down inside a tunnel. Normalcy was restored on the route after two hours, an official said.

Passengers, including children and women, were stuck inside the train for over an hour as it stalled in a tunnel between Central Secretariat and Udyog Bhawan Metro stations at 9.24 am due to a technical snag.

“An eight-coach Metro train carrying 1,791 passengers was stranded in mid-section between Central Secretariat and Udyog Bhawan Metro stations, as the emergency brake which had been applied, did not get released. The snag was reported at 9.24 am and the problem was rectified at 11 am,” a Delhi Metro official said in a statement.

Expressing concern, Delhi Metro Managing Director Mangu Singh has appointed a three-member committee to enquire the case. The breakdown delayed the running of trains and stranded thousands of commuters for hours on the line between Jahangirpuri and HUDA City Centre in Gurgaon.
