After deluge, vector-borne diseases, warn experts
New Delhi, June 22 "With stagnant water all around, threat like dengue, malaria and other vector-borne diseases is high," said Sushum Sharma, head of the department of internal medicine at a noted hospital. "The aedes mosquitoes, which carry dengue, breed in clean water. Hence, with so much waterlogging, the threat of dengue is high," she said. Admitting the threat, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation Commissioner, P.K. Gupta, said the civic agency will soon start its campaign to educate people on the precautions against these diseases. "The rains have just come. We will start the process of issuing advertisements, hand bills and radio publicity to make the citizens aware about it. However, the process of fumigation is on. House-to-house checking of the breeding of mosquitoes is also being done. Till now, there has been no major case of dengue and malaria," he added. Representative of the Mega Delhi Residents Welfare Association representative B.S. Vohra said the process of fumigation started a little late. "The process of fumigation is being done by the corporations but unfortunately it started only after a few cases of dengue were reported," he said. Doctors suggest that precautionary measures should be adopted by people to avoid dengue and malaria. "Apply mosquito repellent cream on all body parts. Aedes mosquitoes do not fly very high, so feet and lower parts of the body are the zone where they attack," said Joint Director of the Directorate of Health Services, Delhi Government, Dr Charan Singh. He said that fever should not be taken lightly and self-medication should be avoided. The main characteristic of dengue fever is that you will have a high fever suddenly. It is accompanied by bodyache, especially in the lower back, said Dr Singh, adding that rashes appear only on the fourth or fifth day of the fever. Six malaria cases have been reported in the city in this month, while 13 cases were recorded in May. Seven cases of dengue have been reported in the Capital so far this season. In 2012, 2,093 cases of dengue were reported in the city. |
Cutoff for girls relaxed in some colleges
New Delhi, June 22 DU colleges, including Bhim Rao Ambedkar, Dyal Singh, Deen Dayal Upadhaya, Rajdhani and Swami Shraddhanand, are offering a relaxation of three per cent to the female candidates applying to various four-year undergraduate programmes. "We have noticed that over the years, the percentage of girls who take admission is not even 50 per cent of the total intake. Hence, the effort is purely to promote girls' education," said I.S. Bakshi, principal of Dyal Singh College. There are also colleges like Dyal Singh (evening) and Shivaji that provide relaxation of five per cent to girls. "As per the Primary Census Abstract 2011, only one out of 10 women is engaged in an economically productive activity as against five out of 10 men in Delhi. So, there is a dire need to get more girls into colleges," said Sashi Nijhawan, principal of Shivaji College. DU has introduced the four-year undergraduate programme starting this academic year under which the students will be required to study 11 foundational courses in the first two years, clubbing together students who seek vocational education with those pursuing simply academic disciplines. |
